6 Must-Do Staten Island Events That Actually Make It Worth Taking a Ride on the Ferry This Spring

Wake up, Staten Island! It's finally spring

That means its time to get out your bucket lists and start checking off those must-see springtime events

This springtime, Staten Island is certainly the borough to be in, with foodie events and lots of fresh air. 

Alright, so we've covered off what's going down in every other borough this spring. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and even the Bronx. So what's going down on Staten Island this spring? That's easy breezy; just continue on reading and take some notes while you're at it. 

Now, here are 6 S.I. events you just have to check out before that stifling summer heat takes over. 


Savor the Flavors (April 3rd)


This year marks the 7th annual Savor the Flavors scholarship fundraising event hosted by the College of Staten Island's Alumni Association. The event will be held Sunday, April 3rd from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the CSI's Center for the Arts Atrium. 

Some of Staten Island's favorite restaurants will come prepared with their signature dishes along with a description of how the dish is prepared.

There will also be guest appearances by celebrity chefs, Rob Burmeister, Eddie Canlon, and John Sierp from Food Network's Chopped


NYC BBQ Cookoff (April 9th)


What's better than a spring barbecue? Nothing really, except the only New York City BBQ Cookoff sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, or KCBS. 

Head to Historic Richmond Town on April 9th from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. for a taste of NYC BBQ Cookoff 2016

Whether or not your a spectator or a competitor, this is a spring foodie event you do not want to miss.


NYC Chili Cookoff 2016 (April 23rd)

Just like the BBQ Cookoff, the NYC Chili Cookoff 2016 is a delicious event that just cannot be passed up. This ICS (or International Chili Society) sanctioned event hosts excellent chili cooks from around the state of NY. Winners of the NYC Chili Cookoff can then compete in the world championships.

US Air Guitar 2016 Qualifier (April 30th)

Ever wish that there was an event for people who can't play guitar for real, but simply pretend to? Guess what? You're in luck. 

We didn't even know that this was a sport/competition/event... whatever you want to call it, until we noticed that the 2016 Qualifier for the US Air Guitar Championship was going down on April 30th in Staten Island at the Hashtag Bar.

This isn't a joke. Just pay your $10 entry fee and air guitar away on April 30th at 8 p.m. 


Freshkills Park Discovery Day (May 15th)

On May 15th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., head over to the Freshkills Park to explore 700 acres of their closed site with free tours. 

Discovery Day is a day where eight miles of trails that had previously been shut off to the public will be open for views of the park's hills, creeks, and wildlife. There will also be a 5k course mapped out for those who wish to run or walk. 

Looking to bike? Freshkills Park has five miles of pavement, including a 3-mile loop through meadows and around wetland ponds. 


The Staten Island Zoo

If you've never been to the Staten Island Zoo, this spring is the time to visit. With so many incredible animals including ostriches, kangaroos, and otters, you'll certainly have a blast, especially walking around the zoo with warm, Spring weather.

Head on over on May 29th and celebrate World Turtle Day, where the Staten Island Zoo will put on turtle races, presentations, and provide information regarding all things turtle and tortoises. Plus, this is included in your zoo admission.
