New Yorkers and Bronx residents alike have been up in arms recently over corporate efforts to redevelop, rebrand, and gentrify certain neighborhoods in the Bronx.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr has especially been under fire after attending a thematically insensitive party in support of a proposed development called the "Piano District," as well as his rude dismissal of his own constituent on the radio while denying gentrification's presence in the Bronx.

But now, artists are fighting back in their own way. 

Rio de Janeiro-based artist Alberto Serrano, along with local graffiti writer Royal KingBee, put up an anti-gentrification graffiti-stylized comic strip on a wall on Walton Avenue in Mount Hope.

The piece imagines the "evil crops developer Dr. Dor" invading the honeycombs of the Bronx, with his "hipster-mite" minions. 

The conceit of the design dramatizes the struggles of Bronx residents, and really people all around New York who've fallen victim to predatory and neglectful landlords, rents rising to absurd degrees and blatant intimidation tactics.

The super villain mastermind in the equation, Dr. Dor, which translates to "Dr. Pain," encourages his underlings to "Gentrify those honeycombs with your cultural appropriation and privilege!" 

And that's exactly what the painting is aiming to sabotage, inhibit, or rally against. It's hard to disagree with their sentiment. 

Ideally, spreading awareness through art can mobilize residents against the very trends that endanger their living spaces and neighborhood character.

It's easy to see how a format such as this can entertain as well as educate, especially younger residents who may be fully unaware of the situation.
