If you have a dream of creating a bombastic billboard for all the world to see, well...
That's a great dream to have. But, if you're willing to settle for a smaller billboard at one of New York's many parks, you're in luck this year.
Socrates Sculpture Park is holding a contest for its billboard, and all entries are welcome!
Unlike in the past where the artwork was curated by well-known artists, the LIC institution is sponsoring an open call to all artistic candidates. This is a big change from when the contest started in 1999 to include the local community.
So, how can you get your masterpiece on the board?
To enter, you must come up with a proposal for its Broadway Billboard series, and if you win your artwork is commissioned to be featured at the Vernon Avenue entrance.
Sounds great, right? Only one condition. According to Time Out NY, the organizers are looking for themes of citizenship, collectivism, identity and democratic freedoms.

Which, we have seen, NYC has no shortage of creative, liberal ideas these past few months. So there should be no shortage of eligible, gifted participants. Who knew finding artwork about political views would be so complicated?
The fact that it opens on the fourth of July is just an awesome bonus. Think of all the waterfront picnic-goers that will see your work! So, what's stopping you?
Send in a CV with a brief description or artist statement, along with a rendering of your idea to democracy@socratessculpturepark.org by 11:59 pm on April 15th. Make sure the size for the render is proportional to 10'x28'.
For the billboard, you know? Best of luck!
