Expensive Taste: There's a $100 Doughnut in Brooklyn Made with Gold & Champagne?!

In New York City, it's generally safe to say we've seen it all. Of course, there's always something new to add into the mix of crazy sh*t, so that list of "it all" is never really finished. Even so, we've seen it.

Last year we saw a pizza with the Pope's face on it, a slice of pizza topped with tiny pieces of pizza, sushi burritos, rainbow bagels, and a rat carrying a slice of pizza to his walk-down apartment in the heart of the NYC subway. Yeah, we thought we'd seen it all

Nope.

Head chef and founder of Manila Social Club in Williamsburg, Björn DelaCruz has created a doughnut filled with ube mousse, leafed in 24-karat gold, and finished with a champagne icing.

Yep. Read that again: 24-karat gold and champagne icing.

This gaudy monstrosity of refined taste and expense is called the "Golden Cristal Ube Donut," and it sells for $100 a pop. Only in New York, right?

In an interview with First We Feast, DelaCruz admitted that while the ingredients might seem a little extravagant, he didn't do it just for the sake of making a pricey menu option.

"I cook with [those ingredients] because I think they taste good," he said. Of the Cristal, that came purely of a love for all types of champagne.

"The reason I chose Cristal over another type of champagne is because Cristal has really great honey notes which goes great with ube (purple yam). For me, it’s shiny and it’s golden, but it comes together to create a really great doughnut, as crazy as that sounds."

No, that doesn't sound all that crazy. What sounds is crazy is that people are ordering them by the dozen (generously cut down to $1,000 because, well, who knows?).

Initially a New Year's treat, the Golden Cristal Ube has been such a wild success that DelaCruz will continue making them throughout the year.

Oh, not only that, but DelaCruz personally delivers doughnut orders across all five boroughs and in the Tristate area at large.

So what do you think, New Yorkers? Delicious decadent delicacy worth a nibble, or something simply too good (read: weird) to be true? Have we seen it all yet? What's next?!
