9 Totally Free Things to Do in NYC This September

It's time to start singing that September Song!

But look, we've still got a few more weeks of summer so we're not about to let go just yet. You can't intimidate us, random cold day.

All these outdoor concerts, parades, music festivals and film screenings say the season is still in full swing.

So put down the pumpkin spice lattes, basics. Because it's time to indulge in some absolutely, positively totally freaking free activities.

And we can't argue with free. Here's the most bomb sh*t going down for zero bucks this month:

1. GMA Summer Concert Series: Jason Derulo (September 1st)

♪Jason Derulo♪The chart-topping star is coming to Central Park's SummerStage this Friday for the 5th year in a row! Don't miss out on this last opportunity to soak up the sun as Good Morning America's 2017 Summer Concert Series comes to a close. 

The concert begins at 7 a.m. but start lining up at 6 a.m. for a good spot. Trust us, it's worth setting your alarm.


2. Brazilian Day 2017 (September 3rd)

Head to Little Brazil this Sunday for the 33rd annual celebration of Brazilian independence, identity and culture. From 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., indulge in 25 blocks of food, music and dance. This insanely enormous festival spans from 46th - 56th Street on 6th Avenue and 46th Street from Madison - 7th Avenue. It's the largest Brazilian event outside of Brazil and attracts over 1 million people. Obviously you want to be one of them.


3. Seaport Music Festival (September 7th - 10th)

All the fun of the South Street Seaport PLUS an indie music concert for absolutely zero dollars. The 15th annual Seaport Music Festival is a one big musical party featuring live music, comedy, dance and film screenings. The lineup includes Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, The Make-Up, Martin Rev, and many more. The schedule is still yet to be announced so check back often!


4. Future Food Expo (September 9th - 10th)

The Future Food Expo returns to the international food mecca known as Brooklyn during the annual Taste Talks awards and festival series. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., this showcase explores what's next in food, from trends in food products and technologies to upcoming brands and media influencers. The expo is housed in the Williamsburg Hotel at 96 Wythe Avenue. Obviously, all the food can be sampled and coffee is served, too -- all free!


5. NVR Sleep – 90's R+B Night (September 13th)

Get your two-step on at the 90's R&B installment of NVR Sleep at Kinfolk90. Dance, jam out and party to music curated by DJs Anna Collecta, Rodney Hazard, and other special guests. Sip dranks courtesy of Old Blue Last.

The party starts at 9 p.m. at 90 Wythe Avenue. No covers in sight!


6. Garjana Outdoor Dance Party (September 14th)


Dance your a$$ off in Washington Square Park's Garibaldi Plaza from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. during this outdoor bash led by five Broadway performers. You'll shake it out to the moves of Mamma Mia! choreographer Monica Kapoor and the all-original music of Douglas Romanow, whose credits include Justin Bieber and Tyga. 

Not only do you learn from these talented performers free of charge, it's also for a good cause: raising awareness about food waste.


7. Feast of San Gennaro (September 14th - 24th)

For 11 days this month, the streets of historic Little Italy transform into an epic festival of Italian food delicacies, colorful parades, live musical entertainment, marching bands, live radio broadcasts. 

Feeling competitive or just really hungry? Sign up for the world famous cannoli-eating competition (September 15th) or 2nd Annual Meatball Eating Contest (September 23rd). The 91st annual fair opens each day at 11:30 am and closes at 11:00 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 12 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. 

It runs along Mulberry Street between Canal Street and Houston Street.


8. Free Museum Days and Nights (September 1st, 8th, 23rd)

Don't miss the last MoMA Free Friday (September 1st) of the summer, where you can access all exhibits and film screenings from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Get tickets at the entrance at 11 West 53rd Street and be sure to start lining up early to beat the crowd!

This month, head to the west side for the Whitney Museum's Free Friday (September 8th) on 99 Gansevoort Street. From 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., tickets are pay-what-you-wish, which we all know means it's totally free!

9. Free Movie Nights (September 1st, 2nd, 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th)

Check out the free outdoor screening series at the Oculus Plaza on the corner of Church Street and Dey Street. This month's selection includes Breakfast at Tiffany's (September 1st) and Enchanted (September 2nd). Doors open at 5 p.m. and the screening begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Brooklyn Bazaar has a ton of free movie screenings this month, ranging from Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (September 6th, 9 p.m.) and Monty Python and the Holy Grail (September 13th, 8 p.m.) to Beetlejuice (September 20th, 8 p.m.) and Basketball Diaries (September 27th, 8 p.m.). Go to 150 Greenpoint Avenue early because seating is first come, first serve!
