Last week, Brandon Stanton, the photographer and creator of the popular Facebook page and book, Humans of New York, shared the heart wrenching story behind a Syrian man and the struggles he and his family have endured since the Syrian war began. 

His brother's entire family and his own wife were killed in a bomb that rocketed through their houses while he was away on work.

After this attack (and the following looting) on his home, he fled the country with his son and his daughter, who still lives with shrapnel in her neck. This refugee, who's name was not disclosed, is currently living in Turkey.  

He is an accomplished PhD who cannot find work in Turkey, even though his published books are being taught by universities there.

Though he is suffering from cancer, he continues to believe that his work is not finished, and hopes that his upcoming relocation to Troy, Michigan will allow him to work on his inventions and projects. 

Some of his ideas include a plane that can run without fuel for 48 hours, and an earthquake prediction system that would be able to predict tremors up to two weeks in advance. 

His posts have been seen by hundreds of thousands of people from around the world, including President Obama. He commented on the final portrait with words of welcome. 

Apart from President Obama's motivational message of acceptance and compassion towards refugees, many residents from Troy, Michigan offered their assistance to the man and his family upon their arrival. 

The U.S. is slated to receive 85,000 Syrian refugees in the year 2016, something both NYC Mayor de Blasio and NY State Governor Cuomo said they'd embrace with open hearts.
