Lighten Up: 5 Must-Do Holiday Activities That Will Make You Feel Like a Kid Again in NYC

We get it; adulthood isn’t always fun. We often inherit certain responsibilities that weigh us down and stop us from really living.

But your imagination knows no bounds, and that's a good thing. You don't always have to pretend to know what you're doing.

However, New York City is like a playground and you should be able to immerse yourself in all the glorious wonder-- especially during the holidays, which are both whimsical and magical.

Although the secret of the jolly red fellow is out, there are still countless ways to feel like a kid again this holiday season.

1. Skate like a pro or nah

Your inner child has been hiding for too long and since it still hasn’t snowed, skating can be a great alternative. Well, that’s if the ice rinks don’t melt.

Go with a group of friends or your significant other and challenge them to a race. Show off your skills in the rink or fall on your butt, the idea is to act silly, have a good time and not just watch from the sidelines.

You can head to Bryant Park, but if you are looking to get away from the crowds you can make a trip to Queens and ice skate at the World Ice Arena or at the City Ice Pavilion.

2. Baking Galore

Despite having an abundance of bakeries and candy shops in NYC, the holidays are the ultimate excuse for us to head to the kitchen and bake because tis’ the season, right?

As a kid, if you celebrated Christmas, you probably helped out with baking cookies and leaving them out for Santa, and let us tell you that even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, baking can still be an amazing activity.

Aside from baking cookies there’s plenty of other holiday treats to make such as milk chocolate lollipops, pies, cakes, cupcakes, or even building a gingerbread house. Plus, you can get creative and check on Pinterest for cool ideas and recipes.

3. Take a trip down memory lane

What better way to relive your childhood memories during the holidays than taking a trip down memory lane? Sure, mom and dad might go at great lengths to remind you of all the disappointments or things you've yet to accomplish, but that's not what we're talking about.

Nothing compares to that sweet nostalgic feeling than watching holiday movies, home videos, or looking through old family photo albums. These three things combined can defrost the inner Scrooge in any New Yorker, and ultimately help them feel like a kid at heart again.

4. Holiday fashion crime spree

Growing up, you were most likely forced to dress in those horrendous holiday sweaters that made you feel like Ugly Betty from Queens right?

You know, the ones your grandmother still gifts you year after year in hopes that she'll live to see you wear them again someday, but instead you store them at the end of your closet.

Sometimes you even contemplate wearing one just to make grandma happy. Well, perhaps you can find the courage this year to walk out of your house with one just for the sake of some drinks and, of course, “mainly” to please grandma.

Yeah. you read right. If one thing’s for certain you can always expect NYC to have fun-filled events involving lots of drinks to celebrate the holidays. You can take part on the ugly sweater parties or the ugly sweater pub crawl to spread some holiday cheer.

5. Christmas Caroling and Holiday Lights

Find your inner child this season by singing some Christmas Carols, then take a drive, or walk around with the family.

NYC is pretty lit this time of year, so you get to experience a colorful and lively holiday surrounded by beautiful houses, window displays, and illuminated Christmas trees.

All of the jaw-dropping decor and lovely shimmering lights will fill you with awe as you spend time with your family because nothing really defines the holidays, or brings beautiful childhood memories than sharing time with those closest to you.
