So there are plenty of extremely realistic holiday spectacles in New York City.
The New York Botanical Garden's Holiday Train Show includes 150 miniature NYC landmarks, and the nativity scene at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is adorned with 69 figures, for godssake.
One church's nativity scene, however briefly, had a far too realistic nativity scene.
NBC reported that Holy Child Jesus Catholic Church, located in Queens, had a nativity scene that was so realistic, in fact, that a newborn baby (umbilical cord still attached) was found inside.
The baby was discovered by a maintenance worker on Monday at noon, according to the NYPD. The worker was cleaning inside the church when he heard the baby crying inside the nativity scene.
"The secretary burst in and said, 'Father, there's an emergency in the church, you have to come,'" said Reverend Christopher Ryan Heanue.
The baby was in, where else, Baby Jesus's cradle. Heanue estimated the baby couldn't have been more than a few hours old.
"There was a baby, wrapped in swaddling clothes, in a towel," said Bishop Octavio Cisnero. "The umbilical cord was still hanging from the baby."
EMTs examined the baby, who appeared to be healthy.
So how did the baby get there?
According to Heanue, surveillance video captured a woman entering the church about 20 minutes before the baby was found.
"A woman did come into the church with some bag, left the church and the bag was sort of dangling in the wind," Heanue said. Heanue said it's impossible to make out who the woman is from the surveillance video, but that police are investigating.
According to state law, the church is considered a Safe Haven, a place which parents are legally permitted to leave a newborn up to 30 days of age anonymously, without the fear of prosecution they'd experience at locations like hospitals, firehouses, or police stations.
However, the law does require the child to be left with an appropriate person, or for someone to be contacted right away.
Still, it's unclear whether the woman will be prosecuted if she's identified.
As for the baby? Heanue said the parish has taken a special interested in him, and that some members have expressed interested in adopting him.
"It means that people care, and they're willing to come in and help and give this new life a future," said Heanue.
We thought we'd heard it all, but this story has officially flabbergasted us. We can sigh, shake our heads, and utter "only in NYC," all we want, but mostly, we're just relieved this newborn baby is on his way to a loving home.
"This child was ... a kind of gift to the church in a poetic way, so we'd love to see it stay in the community," Heanue said.
