We're about to come at you with some groundbreaking dating knowledge, New York City.
It turns out that all the rules about dating that everyone's been preaching at you, the rules like "Wait three days to text," "Wear heels on the first date," and "Agree with everything your date says," are all the worst rules ever.
When it comes to dating, there actually aren't any rules.
You might be wondering, What? How could there not be rules? Well, the answer is simple. Every person is different, therefore every relationship is different.
Dating is not a science, but if you're always waiting for a guy to ask you out instead of doing the asking yourself, you might be missing out on some chemistry.
Read on to learn which dating rules were made to be broken.
1. Don't text the day after you meet

bumble Dating in the digital age turns even the most respectable among us into stalkers. #ItsCalledInvestigating #AndItsNotThatHard
Break this rule. If you receive someone's number at a party, you should be allowed to text that person the next day.
Why? We're not sure. Maybe because it's common decency? Maybe it's because who cares whether you text them the next day or not?
[anad]
If you don't text someone the day after the party, you're totally canceling yourself out of the opportunity for a day full of witty banter. If you do text, you might find yourselves chatting up a storm all day long. You might be hanging out before nightfall.
You miss every shot you don't take, people.
2. Don't text the day after you sleep together

michaelgee3 Me AF 🙋🏽 #lmfao #dead #whichone #sotrue #passedaway #prettymuch #life #lyfe #mylife #me #accurate #everything #rofl #truth #tbh #yas #i #ig #instagood #basically #firstdate #imean #ok #istalkedyou #thestruggle #kbai
The same premise of common decency applies to texting the day after you've done the deed as it does to texting the day after you meet.
If you got together the night before, if you did "it," if you slept together in the same bed, why the eff wouldn't you text the next day to see how that person's day is going?
Like, we're really at at complete loss to understand why this rule would ever exist in the first place. Break this rule if you had fun with your date the night before and you want to let them know, since it's the worst rule anyone ever invented.
3. The guy always pays
Well, this rule implies that we're talking about a heterosexual relationship, but let's just assume for a second we are.
Why shouldn't the girl pay for the guy a time or two? It's pretty fun to get paid for, so why should the girl always be the one to get to experience it?
Also the whole "guy takes care of girl" thing is antiquated and lame, and the girl should get to treat her man to a night on the town.
Plus, we're all struggling millennials, so lots of guys can't afford to pay every time. Could we please just alternate who pays for dates?
4. The guy has to ask out the girl

bumble Thank god it's Sadie Hawkins Day every day on Bumble 😂 #MakeTheFirstMoveToday #OrTomorrow #TheWorldIsYourOyster
This one was always the worst, so let's just do away with it completely. Sound good?
Now, every day is the day before the Sadie Hawkins dance. There's this app called Bumble, where only the girl is allowed to begin the conversation. This is a great step in the right direction.
Let's get rid of gender roles in regards to dating entirely. Gender roles are gross. If you're a girl and you think a guy is cute, ask him out on a date. Ask him if he wants to get drinks. Invite him to sample all the best slices of pizza in NYC.
[anad2]
If you're a girl, don't wait to be asked out. That's not the way things work anymore.
If you asked a guy out and he turned you down because you're a girl and you did the asking, he sounds like the worst guy ever. You definitely do not want to date him.
,5. Only date people from the opposite gender
Remember when gay marriage got legalized nationwide this past summer? Remember how gay marriage has been legal in NYC since 2011?
The point is, gender freedom is abound in this liberal-ass city. If you're gay, date someone who's your sex. If you're straight, date someone from the opposite sex. If you're curious, date whoever you want.
[anad]
The point is, we're in NYC, the city where anything can happen. We can speak from experience on this one; there are same sex couples holding hands, looking cute, and making out all over this amazing city.
We promise, if you decide to make out with someone from your gender on the street, you'll hardly attract any stares at all.
6. Don't kiss on the first date
This rule might have its place as a way to build up tension, which ultimately makes the tension more fun to alleviate, but we don't think it should exist as a rule.
We just think it should be a possibility. You shouldn't have to kiss on the first date, but if you're feeling it, if everything's going well, if both people are vibing, why shouldn't you be able to kiss?
We absolutely love breaking this rule. Kissing on the first date is a blast!
7. Don't double text
This rule sucks on the premise that you should be anything besides yourself when you're dating someone. If you ask us, you should be nothing but yourself. Do nothing but what feels right to you at any given moment.
So, if you have two things to say, send two text messages. If the person you're dating doesn't like you because you sent two text messages in a row, the person you're dating sounds like the worst person ever, and we think you dodged a bullet by finding that out sooner than later.
8. Don't order spaghetti
Or burritos. Or any food that could potentially make a mess.
We think this rule is the worst because we love spaghetti, burritos, wings and nachos. We don't think we should hide this love from our date.
[anad2]
Maybe we could all just bond over being obsessed with buffalo wings, and laugh about all the buffalo sauce on our hands and shirts. That's better than pretending to be something we're not, isn't it?
We think pretending not to be excited about food we love is missing out on a great chance to bond with your date; maybe you both get amped about the same food. We also think, in general, that if you're pretending on your date, you're doing something wrong.
