If you've been following the story of New York City's first micro-unit building, formerly known as My Micro NY, then today's a very special day. 

No, there's not another Williamsburg dumpster on Craigslist with more amenities and a higher price tag than the micro units.

Yes, today's the day leasing begins for the tiny apartments, which is kind of a historic moment for NYC as one of our City's most famous stereotypes-- the closet-sized apartment --has been streamlined and made chic in true NYC fashion.

The building's now going by the name Carmel Place, and it's turned out to be a pretty nice looking modular development located at 335 East 27th Street. 

Even the micro units inside are sleek and attractive, albeit small as hell, starting at only 260 square feet and topping off at 360 square feet. 

But that's the hook. Want to live alone for a "decent" price? Well, micro units might be the answer for the growing number of New Yorkers who are tired of dealing with roommates.

There are 14 units at Carmel Place that are designated as affordable, and those units have drawn about 60,000 applications-- over 4,000 per unit.

A lottery was held for those 14 units, and the winners should be alerted in January, before the building opens in February. 

The demand and generally positive reception of Carmel Place's design and intention may be a signifier that more micro unit developments will come to NYC in the future. 

As it stands, NYC laws determine that an apartment may be no smaller than 400 square feet.

Clearly, exceptions have been made for the first micro unit development in the City, but other developments are jumping on the micro unit marketing bandwagon, advertising 800 square foot apartments as "micro units."

So, since NYC has already articulated the verbiage into our shady real estate lexicon, maybe we'll get more actual micros sooner rather than later.
