One of the reasons we're nuts about this city is that we have a never-ending supply of street art.
Some of it is guerrilla-style, blasted on walls, bridges, tunnels, lamp posts, and everything else a writer or artist can paint, sticker, or plaster posters onto.
The rest of it is commissioned, delicately curated, planned out, designed, and custom formatted for the piece of sidewalk, park space, or square that the installation will inhabit.
A new street art installation called "Nova" is up in the Flatiron district, and it's about the trippiest thing we've seen since the last time we strolled down St. Mark's.
"Nova" looks something like a jungle-gym of multi-faceted mirrors. You probably shouldn't climb it, but there are many entrances to go through for an amazing perspective underneath the dome-ish structure.
It would be something like laying in a stained-glass cave, with the sun shining through all those window panes. Or being eaten by a transformer whose gizzards are super psychedelic.
"Nova" was officially revealed at the Flatiron pedestrian plaza on 23rd Street on Wednesday at 6 p.m., to many onlookers' wonderment. The installation is the brainchild of SOFTlab, and the winning design in an annual selection by 23rd Street Bid.
The installation will run through the end of the holidays as part of "23 Days of Flatiron Cheer," but in case you can't make it, we're running down some of the more impressive shots New Yorkers posted on Instagram over the last day.
