Jim 'Mosaic Man' Power is something of a personality in the East Village. His tile mosaics have been gracing the Lower East Side light posts for years now, including around the Astor Place cube. 

What many don't know about the Mosaic Man, though, is that he's a Vietnam War veteran.

So as a thank you, SD Squared co-owner, Shane Duffy, and some of Home Depot's midtown location employees fixed up Power's apartment recently.

The project was part of Home Depot's "Celebration of Service" program, aimed at thanking veterans for their service in a small way by renovating their living spaces between September 11th and Veteran's Day.

Indarjit Roopchand, department supervisor of electrical and plumbing at the Midtown Home Depot said, "We look at it as a give-back for all their hard years of service and what they did for America."

With SD Squared's own Afghan War veteran Duffy on board for the Power refurb project, this particular gift gained some attention.

Not only is Power responsible for a small part of New York City's artistic character, he's also a part of perhaps the first generation of American war veterans who returned thanklessly from combat, much like many veterans do today.

The team scrubbed Power's eight by eight foot apartment, installed grab bars in the 68 year-old's bathroom, painted the walls, completed a work bench, and various other renovations.

Good for Home Depot, though; helping out when and where help is needed, even if it's only for a short amount of time.
