Donald Trump hosted Saturday Night Live this past weekend, and now, it wasn't what it should have been.
He opened his monologue by saying he's kind of misunderstood. That he's a nice guy.
There were some other not-so-funny jokes in that monologue until Larry David shouted, "Trump's a racist!" from offstage.
We would have appreciated Larry David's "Trump's a racist!" scream from the audience during Trump's opening monologue on Saturday night's SNL episode if it hadn't been followed by David's proclamation "They said they'd pay me $5,000 if I yelled that."
To which Trump replied, "As a business man, I can understand that."
And the interaction between David and Trump highlights the problem with this whole thing; that Donald Trump is "in on the joke"; that anyone farcically portraying him is doing so all in good fun rather than using comedy to highlight a very scary, very serious problem.

Two men in Boston beat a Mexican homeless man while making anti-immigrant statements in the name of Trump in August. According to CNN they said, "Donald Trump was right. All these illegals need to be deported."
So, you see the problem don't you?
Are we disappointed in SNL? Well, we loved the "Bad Girls" sketch, but Trump wasn't in that one now was he?
The Trump episode is a particular blow in the wake of Tracy Morgan's stellar comeback, and Amy Schumer's all-out dominance from SNL's most recent episodes. We were even into Miley Cyrus's schtick, as weird as it was.

This, though? An episode that essentially pandered to a candidate we've long thought was just pulling our leg? Well, it was disappointing.
In the episode's first sketch, a 2018 United States was portrayed, one in which ISIS has been defeated and given jobs at a Damascus Trump Hotel & Casino, and Putin resigned from his post after Trump called him a "loser."
Trump was also farcically presented a check for the U.S./Mexico border wall by Beck Bennett, who was playing Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto. "Nothing brings two countries together like a wall," Bennett said.
We cringed during the Twitter sketch when Trump fake-tweeted at Kenan Thompson, stating Thompson's birth certificate is fake, and if you add "Y" to Kenan, you get "Kenyan."
We get it SNL. Ratings are cool, and it worked. Trump's SNL episode had the highest ratings for an episode since January of 2012.

We also understand the SNL cast members were between a rock and a hard place, especially because Trump nixed any jokes that weren't G-rated to please Iowa voters.
You'd think Trump would nix racist jokes in an attempt to please voters, but that'd be asking far too much.
Also, he did a "Hotline Bling" dance that made us never want to watch Drake again.
Let's just say the bulk of the episode was empty, weak, and creatively uninspired. They had an opportunity to exploit Trump as the farce that he is in real life, and they didn't (or couldn't). The joke has run its course, and that's what we needed from SNL at this time, and we didn't get it.
Now that SNL's got its ratings, maybe they can get a host we all respect next week, or at least someone they don't have to pull punches with.
