Electronic music festivals in and around New York City have a bad history of failing miserably. 

With overdoses plaguing the scene, terrible mishaps of organization and an overall "Bad vibes, Bro," would-be massively successful festivals like Electric Zoo have fallen victim to the apparent curse that is the NYC festival.

So the shining star of the NYC electronic music festival environment is of course, Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival, or BEMF, and it starts today.

Unlike Governor's Ball, the prospective Madison Square Garden festival and its conflict with Coachella host AEG Entertainment's Panorama fest planned for basically the same place and time, BEMF doesn't really have any competition.

Something like Brooklyn Comes Alive, it's also kind of like a CMJ-type marathon, where concerts are held in venues across the City for days on end, under the same umbrella event. 

The major concept here, the good part of this, is that the festival aims to simplify the convoluted "EDM" scene by blurring the lines between highly commercial acts and up and comers from underground, while also disregarding the genre types that so often destroy conversations about music.

As their page describes, "BEMF strives to blur genre boundaries and push past notions of underground and commercial in order to simply present artists that need to be heard in NYC and provide a platform for those in the electronic music industry to discuss ideas...and celebrate unique artists."

So you can just go and dance and have fun and not worry if you're in an electro-new-wave-dubstep show or a psytrance-downtempo-acid-house set, because neither of those labels really make a difference; it's about the sound-- not describing it.
