That's the Best You Can Do?! 7 Worst Places to Propose in NYC (& Where to Propose Instead)

New York City can be such a romantic place. The lights, the sounds, the landmarks, the food, the people.

It can provide the perfect backdrop for one of the most important moments in a couple's relationship: the proposal.

However, there are some people that just don't really think it through. We're not saying you should plan out an elaborate scheme or dish out thousands of dollars just to pop the question.

But we are saying that there are some spots in NYC that you DEFINITELY should avoid if you're hoping to walk down the aisle with your S.O.

Of course, we know that those spots may have huge significance to your relationship, in which case, congratulations! You thought it through, and found a place that's meaningful. By all means, pop the question.

If you're just throwing the line out there to see if it catches, we'd say skip these spots and propose here instead.

1. Port Authority Bus Terminal

adweek We're loving this new outdoor campaign from @Spotify. Hit the link in our bio to see more billboards in cities around the world.

Now we're a bit biased. Some of us have to take the bus to work, and spend a considerable amount of time in Port Authority. It's not the worst place in the world for transportation.

But it is a pretty crappy place to ask your significant other to pledge the rest of their life to you.

No one wants to be proposed to while sweating through their clothes from running to catch a bus after a grueling day of work.

[anad]

Seriously, if you're planning on popping the question, you can probably find a more meaningful spot than the bus terminal at Port Authority.

Instead:

Grand Central Terminal

Lets say travel is a really important part of your relationship. Whatever the case, Grand Central is a much more attractive spot to pop the question than Port Authority.

It's got an old school elegant transportation flare, that doesn't include the grunginess of Port Authority.

2. JFK Airport

Some of us have been in long distance relationships. We consider airports some of the spots where we've said some of our most meaningful goodbyes to our significant others.

Regardless, we still wouldn't say we'd find it incredible romantic to be proposed to in JFK. Granted, it's much better than LaGuardia Airport

But we don't think anyone would be seriously psyched to get off a potentially long flight, feeling dehydrated and grimy, just to have someone get down on one knee.

Instead:

Let's say that you and your S.O. love planes. Maybe they're a pilot. Who knows? You do. That's why you should def propose at JFK if that's meaningful to you and your S.O.

If it's just about the aviation, take your S.O. to the Intrepid. Most New Yorkers never get a chance to actually see it, so it would be a thoughtful, meaningful act. If it's all about the sky, go to the Hayden Planetarium.

Heck, even a blanket in a park looking at the sky is better and more thoughtful than JFK.

3. Prison

Hey, we don't know you. Maybe you're both stuck in the slammer for some Bonnie & Clyde type adventures. Then getting engaged in prison is probably a story to tell the grandkids... or not.

But if you're peeping through that glass dressed in an orange suit or waiting for someone to post bail, we'd say that you probably could wait until you're not separated by handcuffs to pop the question.

Instead:

Wait your time. Plan out the perfect words to say when you're out. Then, head on over to Central Park or basically anywhere outside to ask your S.O. to be your spouse.

4. Cemetery

Some cemeteries are beautiful places. They're meant to be a peaceful final resting place for the deceased. We get that people like to visit them to pay respects or just admire the historical value of the spot.

However, it's really a morbid spot for someone to ask a significant other to spend the rest of their life with them. We get the significance: you're trying to show your S.O. that life is short and we need to live it to the fullest while we can.

[anad2]

But when there's a funeral going on in the background and you're standing on the ground someone is buried under, it's a bit disrespectful to propose.

Instead:

If your S.O. is into the morbidity of the cemetery, but you don't want to run into the potential of being disrespectful towards someone mourning the loss of their loved ones, try taking them to the Morbid Anatomy Museum in Brooklyn.

Or, if they like the spook factor of old cemeteries, check out the Boroughs of the Dead Walking Tours that offer ghost tours through Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.

5. Wherever there's a ton of garbage

NYC has a lot of garbage. Like, a lot.

But that doesn't mean that you should ask the most important person in your life to marry you in front of a big pile of one.

There's no reason why you should be asking the love of your life to be your spouse in, near, or around a garbage dump in the city.

[anad]

Seriously, there are so many spots in this city that are worth proposing at. You do not need to pop the question where it stinks of trash.

Instead:

Anywhere that doesn't have garbage. Maybe half a block down the street. Or just wait until it's not garbage day. You'll be golden.

6. Sporting events

There are tons of sporting stadiums in NYC. We've even made you a list of where to eat when you're at them.

But how many times have you been to a sporting event just to have someone get down on one knee in front of the entire stadium, just to have the proposal turned down?

Look, some of us at the spoiledHQ LOVE sports. We'd be cool with spending every single Sunday parked in front of the couch watching the NY Giants.

But that does NOT mean that we want our day of tailgating and drinking booze in the cold to result in a ring on our finger.

We're just not prepared for that. And what if your team loses? What if you're rooting for opposing teams? There are just so many unfortunate scenarios that you can't plan for.

Instead:

Organize your group of friends/family to spend a day at the park playing your S.O.'s favorite sport. If they love football, find a spot to play some flag football. Bring a bunch of food and drinks to share with everyone.

When everyone's having fun, pop the question. You'll all have something to remember. Plus, you have plenty of people to photograph the big moment for you.

7. Subway station

razguz Un fino ejemplar de la fauna neoyorquina #ratadelsubway #subwayrat

So how many rats have you seen on subway platforms? We've seen a bunch.

And you know that stale smell of the air in subway stations and the subway cars? Or, worse, the smell of bodily functions in subway cars?

Do you want your S.O. to remember that smell or those rats every single time they look at their wedding band (if you two decide to do rings)?

[anad2]

Lets just put it this way, most transportation spots are not the greatest spots to propose to the love of your life.

Instead:

If you need to get from point A to point B and it's a mild night out, grab to Citi Bikes. Or go all out and walk. Walking hand in hand through the city is a very romantic thing for any couple to do, let alone one ready to tie the knot.
