The Port Authority is like that smelly kid way back in grade school; nobody really likes 'em, but you tolerate 'em. 

Seriously, nobody wanted to eat lunch with 'em, nobody wanted to carpool with that kid, and nobody wanted to be friends with that kid, either. 

On the spectrum of mass transit hubs in New York City, the Port Authority Bus Terminal is most definitely the smelly kid.

So it was big news that last week, it was agreed that the smelly kid will finally take an in-depth wash in between its toes and behind its ears; a real-life bath, if you will. 

Actually, they're going way further than that. They're building a completely brand new hub, one that hopefully won't ever smell. Ever. 

And yes, the project will cost up to $10 billion. That's a lot of green to throw into a bus terminal, but thankfully you don't have to pay for it with your taxes like that MTA plan we divulged details on earlier this month. 

This existing bus terminal is only 65 years old, but it's still considered one of the worst experiences of New York City. So they're selling the air rights, or the right to build above the existing structure, which will hopefully pay for the cost of building a brand new terminal, just one block West. 

Not a bad idea, right? Hand over the place nobody likes to some brands and condos, because Manhattan clearly does not have enough of those.

The Port Authority is also holding a multinational contest and will decide on a design winner by fall of 2016. (We're just over here thinking if they want to go really outside the design box, like Guggenheim Museum outside of the box... time will tell, though, right?) 

It hasn't been announced what retailers will be moving into the bottom of the condo tower to be built above the existing station, but we're willing to guess there's already three or four Manhattan locations for each. Think H&M. 

All jokes aside, it should be done in several years... and hopefully by then, they'll have figured out how to make the buses a less horrible experience as well.  

But that's a little too wishful thinking... right?
