It's Gettin' Chilly Out There: 7 Struggles of Being Single During the Fall Season in NYC

You've probably noticed that New York City has become notably frostier, pretty much overnight. Once again, we're rocketing headfirst into another winter.

There are plenty of perks of cold weather in NYC. The daily haul to the subway has certainly become much more less of a sweat-fest, and no one is pressuring us to wear bikinis or trunks, so we are officially able to take whole pizzas to the face again.

There is one sad truth about winter, though. For many of us, our summer lovin' was a blast but it's way, way in the past.

There are certainly plenty of perks to being single, please don't get us wrong. We don't have anyone's approval or satisfaction to seek but our own, we can wear sweatpants and never shave.

We also don't have to worry about all those pesky communication, jealousy, and feeling issues that come with being in a relationship, and of course we're allowed to hit the town and hook up with whoever we want.

However numerous the list of pros are, though, the fact remains that being single in the winter comes with a whole host of struggles. Read what they are below.

1. You won't want to go out

When it's cold, going out is way harder. No one likes trudging through the snow in heels, and absolutely no one likes leaving their warm, cuddly bed to face the frosty abyss of NYC's streets.

Of course, though, for us single people who want to, as they say, "get it in," brave the slushy, cold streets we must, if we want to have any chance of getting laid.

Inevitably, the allure of our beds wins out over the possibility of kissing a cute stranger in a bar, but we face the prospect of an evening alone in bed with bitterness. If we were in one of those relationships, we could stay in bed and watch Netflix all night and get laid. The inequity is staggering!

2. Tinder is the worst

fuckjerry So Frustrating

Of course, getting out on the town and meeting a stranger in a bar is not the only way to hook up. There is the ever present phenomenon of Tinder, the constant feeling that if you just spent enough time swiping, maybe you'd meet someone great.

You've got plenty of friends with their infuriating success stories. This friend when on one Tinder date ever and fell in love instantly. This other friend met her boyfriend of three years on Tinder and it wasn't even a big deal.

All the single New Yorkers holla. You feel us, right? You're lonely, you're pretty much lying on your bed staring at your wall imagining how much better your life would be if you were in a relationship. So you start swiping.

An hour and a half later you're sick of staring at your cell phone screen. You've got six matches but everyone you've said hello to hasn't answered, and you haven't answered anyone that's said hello to you. #Struggles.

3. RomComs

Winter is packed to the brim with cute romantic comedies.

It's impossible to watch Love Actually without wanting to hold someone while you fall asleep that night. You can't watch The Holiday without lamenting the fact that you're not in love.

Don't even get us started on Pretty Woman or Ground Hog's Day, and especially don't get us started on The Notebook.

The fact is, you're going to wind up bundled up in your blankets, perusing Netflix for a movie to watch. You are going to be tempted by a ton of romantic comedies filled with happy, in love people. They're going to make you sad that you're single.

Here's our tip for this one. Just 500 Days of Summer or The Perks of Being a Wallflower. At least those movies are realistic.

4. Your friends in relationships

You've never really considered yourself a bitter person, but you can't help but feel surges of jealousy when your friends in a cute, happy, monogamous relationship hold hands and call each other by pet names in front of you.

Like, is it really necessary for them to make out when it's just the three of you? Couldn't they wait?

You've never really considered yourself a jealous person, so you're surprised by the thrill you feel when you find out one of your friends who was in a long-term relationship just became single. If you really investigated that feeling, you suppose it takes the pressure off of you.

Plus, now that friend will obviously be way more available to hang out with you now. Mainly, you're glad when your friends become single because going to the bar with couples is never fun. They always want to leave early to go hook up with each other.

5. Winter Wonderland

bumble Give us a drink. Give us some music. All is gonna be ok. #TuneOutDrama #TuneInMusic

You're filled with an anxious, stomach wrenching pain when you walk past Bryant Park's Winter Wonderland, or Rockefeller Center's ice skating rink and famed tree.

You long to ice skate around the rink in Central Park hand-in-hand with a beau. You know it'd be perfect to whimsy down 5th Avenue under all the Christmas lights with your arm around a significant other.

Plus, of course there's no one to make out with under the mistletoe, and you won't have a date for your office holiday party.

At least you have pizza. Does your relationship to pizza count as romance?

6. Making Seamless minimums

bumble Sometimes opposites don't attract. #WhatDoYouMeanNoSugar? #WhatIsRefinedSugar?

People in relationships can make the $15 or even the $30 Seamless minimums much easier than single people.

We mean, it's obvious. People in relationships need more food to sustain themselves than a single person does. Also, there's less guilt involved in splitting nachos or a whole cake when you're doing it with another person.

When you're eating all those nachos or cake by yourself, and you're single that's just much more depressing. To make our Seamless minimums, we have to order much more food than we'd otherwise get. Then we have to eat it all by ourselves.

7. #SleepingAlone

Once you've gotten used to sleeping with someone, sleeping alone is much more difficult. Sleeping in NYC is loud. There are horns and sirens and yelling people on the street.

It's much more comforting to be shaken awake by a loud siren or a dangerous-sounding street fight when you have someone to cuddle you back to sleep than it is to wake up in your cold bed alone.

Plus, do we even have to talk about morning sex?

[anad2]

Having morning sex with one-night-stands isn't fun. Everyone's breath smells and last night's makeup is more than smeared.

Starting your day having sex with someone you love, though, is a whole different story. Which is why being single in the winter is kind of lame. #SadFace.
