CMJ has been a force behind the New York City music scene for 35 years. Bands, like King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, have come from as far as Australia to play CMJ. It's kind of a big deal.
If you've never heard of it, it's kind of like Fashion Week, but for music. Venues across the City host CMJ showcases that are generally full of young talent, though there are a variety of well established acts playing CMJ.
It works a lot like Comic Con, where you buy a badge and are granted access to all CMJ events. Though each showcase is first come first serve and venue rules regarding 21+ are in place throughout the Marathon.
Regular, General Admission badges go for $549, but there are various pricing tiers. For students, the price is lower and there are even group rates; but the price isn't the important part.
The important part is that you gain access to unlimited showcases during the Marathon. In fact there are so many showcases to check out that we recommend spending some time on CMJ's page developing your itinerary.
There's even a freakin' CMJ app for mobile, so you can take your schedule with you as long as your smartphone is charged.
There are so many bands playing that you actually do need an app to organize your CMJ time. It's really convenient. But we suggest you scope the list below of our preliminary CMJ picks. These artists are going to slay.
