There was a time when movie adaptations of comic books were few and far between. Sure, there had been a series of Batman and Superman films over the years, even Dick Tracy with Madonna, and even The Shadow if you want to include movies coming from a weird medium like radio shows, too. 

During those idyllic days before X-Men and Spiderman launched a constant stream of comic book movies, we weren't so desensitized to our favorite comic heroes and antiheroes coming to the big screen.

But when Blade came out in 1998, tons of people lost their sh*t because it seemed like the dopest thing to happen in the movies since ever. 

Remember, The Matrix didn't come out for another year, and X-Men wouldn't come out for another two years. It was also one of the lesser known comic book heroes to take the screen. Prior to Blade we had the oft-forgotten amazingness of Brandon Lee's (RIP) The Crow. 

At the time, there wasn't much in the realm of what we could do to translate the imaginative intricacies of comic book art to the big screen. There were plenty of great ideas, but many times it just didn't work out (see: Spawn, and the easily forgotten, 1990 Yugoslavian straight-to-video Captain America). 

When the idea seemed a little big, the technology simply wasn't there. Fortunately, Blade's success never hinged on incredible special effects (except for vampires turning to ash). 

Your disdain or excitement for superhero movies aside, a major part of the amazingness that is Blade is in the movies's very first scene, the "blood rave." People dancing, vampires, electronic music, you know? A rave. With blood. Well, that scene gets real. At Terminal 5. TONIGHT. 

It's kind of melange of Halloween vibes and NYC Comic Con vibes all rolled up into a bloody ball, produced by BBQ Films with The Crystal Method headlining.
