Everyone knows the subway is the dictator of New York City transportation. And deservingly so, considering it brings NYC's residents to all of NYC's boroughs and over 400 stops.
But do you ever sort of wonder whether the subway is actually fastest? Do you ever think maybe, just maybe, it might actually be faster to bike? Or take an Uber? Well, Wired was curious too, so they decided to find out once and for all.
What did they do? Simple. They conducted an experiment.
They sent five Queens residents from Long Island City to the Financial District through five different modes of transportation: one took the subway, one rode in a taxi, one biked, one Ubered it, and one braved the water and travelled by ferry.
Wired's guinea pigs didn't just consider speed as a criterion, either. They took into account time, expense, reliability, comfort, and available apps.
So, curious which mode of transportation topped this experiment?
