There's no question that the vast majority of New Yorkers prefer the subway to the bus. But why is that? It's usually much more bumpy ride, and a lot more "stop and go" than the subway. 

Also, many New Yorkers would agree that it is indeed harder to read and harder to nap on the bus. Whether it's true or not, it feels like there's less room on the bus than the subway. 

And least but not least, the bus is more expensive than the subway-- and there's nothing you can do about that. And because of that reason in and of itself, no real New Yorkers take the bus-- unless they have to. 

Well now, with this handy travel time comparison map, you can let the Internet do the math for you when planning whether to use the bus or subway.

Much of NYC's population lives in proximity to at least one subway line, and the subway efficiently (well, relatively) services much of this city, but not all of it. Not even close.

But the bus has some major benefits. For one, there are about ten times more bus lines than subway lines. Not only that, the bus covers triple the subway's mileage making way more stops.

On the flip side, the subway does have three times as many cars as the bus has busses, and boasts almost twice the annual ridership. 

But the fact remains: there are giant portions of NYC that exist in a perpetually under-serviced state, bereft of the widely-available mass transit services most of the rest of New Yorkers enjoy.
