About a month ago, we dropped a reminder that Open House New York would be opening doors all around New York City for its 14th anniversary in October.
For those of you not in the know, Open House is a non-profit organization that brings the public into off-limits, exclusive, and private spaces around the city every year-- but for one weekend only.
What's so great about going places you're not allowed in most of the year? Well, every location on the Open House roster is an architectural destination of some type. Whether interior, exterior or both, OHNY takes you there October 17th & 18th.
Now just recently, the Open House folks announced the full lineup of structures available for tours and exploration, and this year's list is pretty bonkers.
Some of the feats of engineering and architecture are as old as New York itself, like Battery Weed at Fort Wadsworth, the Staten Island sentinel responsible for guarding New York Harbor for hundreds of years.
Another blast from NYC's past is St. John the Divine Cathedral; seriously, an art/architecture buff could spend about a week without getting bored.
Interested in more of the city's most impressive religious architecture? Check out Ganesh Temple in Flushing, featuring Hindu idols sculpted from black granite, marvelously carved teakwood doors, and towers standing in each of the cardinal directions.
Looking toward NYC's future?
Google is hosting Design & Workplace tours to put people in the shoes of a Google employee for a little while and there are detailed tours of the brand new 34th Street Hudson Yards subway station, as well as the Hudson Park.
Not to mention, one of NYC's least publicized superlatives: the world's largest rooftop soil farms in Long Island City, called Brooklyn Grange.
Other locations include Carnegie Hall, Brooklyn Brewery, Center for Italian Modern Art, New York Hall of Science, Vale of Cashmere, and the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art. Check out the complete list here.
Seriously, where else can you tour a Gothic cathedral, a Hindu temple, space age transport hub, the most powerful web company, and the largest rooftop soil farm... and just be scratching the surface?
