Hey New York City, what does October mean to you?
To us, it means beautiful fall leaves, comfy sweaters, and plenty of fall comfort food. What kind of comfort food, you ask?
Well, of course we were referring to pumpkin pie, apple pie, and chicken parmesan. Basically, we haven't counted our calories for a very long time.
To us, October also means plenty of day trips with plenty of hiking, apple picking, and pumpkin picking. Of course October also means Halloween, plus a bunch of other excellent fall activities.
In addition to all these fine aspects of October, October also means architecture month, the MLB playoffs, film festival month, and, again, Halloween.

1. New Yorker Festival (October 2nd - October 4th)

The New Yorker Festival will bring together wildly influential screenwriters, authors, poets, and journalists. You’ll hear some great talks, fascinating readings, stand-up comedy, film screenings, and tastings.
It’s a three-day celebration of art and ideas, and we’re all lucky enough to be in the right city to be a part of it.
Speakers include Toni Morrison, Don Delillo, Larry Kramer, and Junot Diaz. Jason Segel will talk about playing David Foster Wallace, and Abby and Ilana will talk about their roles in Broad City.

2. Mets playoffs
lilesbella #TheMets win the NE division for the 1st time since 2006. My dad died in 2006 & all I wanted was a win, just be my heroes & win the Series but no. It was a FAIL. I turned off the TV & just cried, not loud weeping but just quiet tears that went on forever. It was like when you love someone but they just let you down over & over again but you can't not love them because you remember how good they can be but you just can't deal. Being a Mets fan after that was never the same for me. I couldn't bear the let down anymore. I don't watch the games cos I'm afraid I might jinx them & they'll lose (which does tend to happen). I never get my hopes up early in the season because we all know they start good then fuck up but....this year I felt might be different. I'm afraid to get my hopes up but I'm genuinely happy & hopeful today, I'm crying sincerely. I want them to win but I really, really, really, REALLY don't want them to lose. I really want this guys, so be my heroes my beloved Mets & this time, win! ❤️
Well, the New York Mets have won the National League East and are getting ready for postseason competition for the first time in many years.
Who will they face? Los Angeles Dodgers, of course. This matchup's going to be pretty rich, so get your tickets immediately. There's even been some pre-playoff snark between our good ol' MTA and Metro Los Angeles.
Is there any ecstasy that exceeds the joy of celebrating a playoff victory for a team that hasn't seen postseason action since 2006? Especially since the last time Mets played meaningful baseball this late into the fall, it was sweeping Los Angeles?

Look ma! We finally made it. By that we mean, we're finally friends with the rapper Fat Joe. Since we love leaning back and everything, we figured it made sense.
We had a popped off event with Tablelist in September, so it only made sense to get back into the partying jam with them for this month. If you love getting crazy, hanging out with us, and rocking out to FAT JOE's beats, then you've got to come to this event with us.

4. Pumpkin Picking, Corn Maze & Wine Tasting, Oh My! (October 10th)
Are you yearning for some fall action? You know what we mean by fall action. We mean a little drinking, a little pumpkin picking, and a lot of high intensity navigating corn mazes.

5. NYC Independent Film Festival (October 12th - October 18th)
The NYC Indie Film Festival seeks to showcase the best independent films from all around the world to the public and entertainment industry in NYC. They seek to do so by remaining focused on low budget films and emerging filmmakers; in other words, the true indies.
The genres of movies in this festival include short films, feature films, music videos, and animated works. They'll also have panels and parties in addition to screenings during this week-long gathering of like-minded filmmakers.
It's a festival that's eager to embrace fresh ideas and storytelling, a haven for filmmakers who nurture a passion for the art form.

This music marathon is a festival held in NYC over five days. It includes artists and showcases, speakers, sessions, and workshops.
Rocking out at this festival for the past 35 years, CMJ has featured some of the best new music from NYC's incredible live venues. This year will brighten the festival's already blazing legacy, with incredible musical performances by artists deemed favorites by industry and fans.

At the NYC Food and Wine Festival, 500 chefs will host more than 100 events. These events will bring to life everything from culinary expertise to mixology; it'll bring together everyone from wine connoisseurs to foodies in a giant festival.
So giant, in fact, that it's NYC's largest food and wine festival. It's put on by The Food Network and Cooking Channel, and they've already raised $8.5 million to fight hunger.
This festival just means more leverage in the fight against world hunger, as 100% of this festival's proceeds are dedicated combatting hunger.
Its events, like "Best Bloody Mary Brunch" and "Blue Moon Burger Bash", will be held at various venues from the Warick New York Hotel to Chelsea Piers. Check the full list of events here.

NYC's important buildings fill every day with people striving to keep our city running. For one weekend, they'll all be unlocked to the public eye.
From historical to modern, residential to commercial, hundreds of buildings throughout the five boroughs are open for visits, tours, talks, and performances during Open House New York Weekend.
OHNY Weekend strives to empower NYC's citizens to deepen our understanding of urban design, and to meet the people who design, build, and preserve NYC.
Buildings available for tours and talks in 2014 included the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Edgar Allen Poe Cottage, the Brooklyn Historical Society, and the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House. This year's buildings will be posted right here on October 6th.
9. Harvest Fest & Pumpkin Patch (October 18th)

On Sunday, October 18th the Harvest Fest & Pumpkin Patch will rock out at the Queens Botanical Garden.
This amazing fall celebration will include games, nature walks, composting demonstrations, craft and food vendors, a beer tent, and a pumpkin patch. These attractions are incredible for many reasons, not the least of which is that pumpkins are essential for fall enjoyment.
Also, did we mention there'd be a petting zoo? That's right. Plus, Astrograss live bluegrass music, which is of course off the chain.
It's going to be one of fall's most excellent events, so make sure you mark down October 18th on your calendars.
10. The Food Film Festival (October 22nd - October 25th)

At the Food Film Fest, you get to taste what you see on the screen.
Anyone who's ever dealt with a watering mouth in front of the Food Network knows how incredible and necessary it is to have an event that brings food off the screen and into viewers' mouths. Which is why we're grateful for the opportunity to eat at the Food Film Fest.
This multi-scensory food and film experience has fed more than 30,000 viewers from NYC to Charleston to Copenhagen in its eight years. Its awards are presented in seven categories, such as Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, Best Super-Short Film, and Best Food Porn Film.

11. NYC Craft Beer Festival (October 23rd - October 24th)

If you love beer, you absolutely need to be a part of the NYC Craft Beer Festival. It'll include 150 top shelf beers, ciders, and meads from 75 breweries.
If you love beer and you love choices, you'll be delighted to learn that the NYC Craft Beer Festival is the largest selection of seasonal beers, ciders, and meads in NYC. If you've just got to have your pumpkin beer fix, this is absolutely the festival to get it.
The festival's Grand Tasting will feature an extensive variety of artisanally produced beers from top breweries. In other words, you'll get drunk in style. This amazing event will pop off at the 69th Regiment Armory at 68 Lexington Avenue.

12. Boo at the Zoo (October 24th - October 25th)

On weekends in October the Bronx Zoo holds Boo at the Zoo, an NYC favorite when it comes to Halloween traditions.
Come by for music, magic, and animals surrounded by mystery and mischief. Come by for the Jack O’Lantern Illumination and wander though a maze of 1,000 hand-carved and beautifully lit Jack O’Lanterns in World of Darkness.
Pumpkins will be carved into the shapes of creepy and crawly bugs, bats, hawks, vipers, eels, and more. They’ll also have costume parades on afternoons from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. and then again from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
There will also be a hay maze, located at the butterfly pad and open on weekends from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. See if you can find your way out.

Going down on October 30th at The Cutting Room, PhantasmaGorey Halloween Festival is one of the city's most insane Halloween events, replete with teasing harlequins, masked princes, and plague doctors.
This party will include dangers, thrills, and pleasures beyond comparison. If you want to celebrate the certainty of your death, or just the fact that it's Halloween and you live in NYC, you should probably come to this party.
