Did you notice the soaked roads and gloomy skies this morning? Sure, we needed some rain, but it wasn't just normal rain-- it was runoff from Hurricane Joaquin. 

Joaquin intensified to a category 1 hurricane Wednesday morning, according to NBC, which is the reason you got so wet walking to work. We're still waiting to learn more about the tropical system's future path.

The National Weather Service reported that Joaquin escalated to hurricane strength around 8 a.m. on Wednesday and wind speed topped at 75 miles per hour. 

It's currently stagnant in the Caribbean, whose residents have been issued hurricane warnings. It's unclear whether the storm will land in the United States.

Computer models suggest Joaquin might land ashore between North Carolina and the Delmarva Peninsula, but every state from North Carolina to Connecticut is in the storm's "cone of uncertainty."

If Joaquin does hit New York City, we'll be dealing with even heavier rains, coastal flooding, and strong winds.

We really, truly hope Joaquin steers clear of NYC, considering we're just barely recovered from Sandy and everything. We also hope everyone in the Caribbean says safe. 

The city's Office of Emergency Management says it's been monitoring the storm for a while and will hold daily weather consults with the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center as they continue to track the hurricane.

The office said they have "robust plans" for "these types of events." 

Our robust plans personally include staying inside and Netflix and chilling, but we're certainly glad the city has taken steps toward hurricane proofing.
