It Was the Best of Times... in the Worst of Bars: 6 Most Overrated College Sports Bars in NYC

The worst time of the year has finally ended. We’re talking about the time of year when the only major sport on television is baseball.

The time of year when ESPN’s top ten is strictly diving catches, which are obviously hard to do, but get super boring after the first or second time you see them. Side note: it’s totally awesome on the Not Top Ten when two outfielders run into each other, but that’s about as rare as seeing Haley’s Comet.

Anyway, just-baseball-season is finally over, and with its end comes the start of one of the greatest American traditions:

Getting black out drunk and watching college football.

So, in order to make the best of the beginning of football season, we’re here to give you the most overrated college sports bars in NYC. We’re talking about the overcrowded, over-hyped spots that smell like farts and charge you twenty bucks for a side of fries.

We just want you to have the best college football watching experience available, aside from tailgating and going to an actual game.

1. Tonic East (411 3rd Avenue)

anatehen Bill is Happy now...go Penn St! #pennstate #nyc

This is not a sports bar. We’ve seen it on a bunch of best college sports bar lists and it simply isn’t a sports bar.

The service is terrible. The place is usually packed with frat bros, but it seems like the focus is more on dancing than creating a dope college sports experience.

We’re not necessarily hating on Tonic East for being a bad bar, even though it’s definitely not that sweet regardless of the roof deck, but we’re hating on because it’s been masquerading as a sports bar when it really isn’t one.

Just because you have beer towers and a bunch of flat screen TV’s doesn’t mean you’re a sports bar.

2. The Football Factory (6 W 33rd Street)

When they say football, what they really mean is soccer. This is America and in America, football is called football and soccer is called soccer. Don’t get it twisted.

Anyway, even though this is a soccer bar, LSU fans still come here to watch their squad. It gets so packed that it’s impossible to move around.

All in all, it's good if you’re interested in watching Manchester United beat some other soccer team (Manchester City? Is that a soccer team?); not so good if you want to watch real football.

3. The Hill (416 3rd Avenue)

becca5230 The aptly named UT bar in Manhattan! #gbo #vols #thehill #nyc

The food here is the worst. Well, not the worst in the world, but still pretty terrible. We’re talking about cheeseburgers that are still half frozen and bland, boring wings.

The service is generally terrible and the atmosphere is weird. The Hill has the strangest sports bar furniture that we’ve ever encountered. Most of the chairs in the upstairs lounge we’re more like ottoman’s than chairs and while they may be chill to sit in for a drink or two, they get pretty uncomfortable by half time.

Honestly, felt like the owners built a bar and then decided, "Screw it; let’s throw in some flat screens and call it a sports bar!"

Also, it’s pretty tough to see the TV’s from outside, so chilling on the outdoor patio isn’t a super viable option.

4. Public House (140 E 41st Street)

publichousenyc A lot of green in our HOUSE... Ain't no party like a #IrishParty 🏈🍀 #NotreDame leads #GeorgiaTech at halftime 13-7. LETS GO IRISH! #FightingIrish #NotreDameFootball #GameWatch #NDNY #PublicHouseNYC #IrishPride #PlayLikeAChampionToday #DrinkLikeAChampionToday #NDFootball #InPUBLIC

This is arguably the most overrated sports bar in NYC. Public House is super narrow and it’s seriously crazy how hard it is to move around.

The food is nothing special and the service is decent, but people rave about this place as a great sports bar and it just doesn’t live up to the hype.

It’s not that this place is incredibly gross or overpriced; it just doesn’t meet the expectations on any level, so for that, we're taking our talents elsewhere.

5. Kettle of Fish (59 Christopher Street)

hillarylynn1 When in NYC during pre season. #Packers

Kettle of Fish is beat as far as sports bars are concerned. It’s a Wisconsin bar, so they have Packers and Badgers stuff on the walls, but they usually don’t have Wisconsin beers (just your typical Miller Lite, Miller High Life etc.).

It’s pretty cheap, but they don’t have a ton of great seating and it gets packed pretty quickly for games.

Also, they don’t have food which is just preposterous. If Jon Taffer got his hands on this spot, his first move would be to implement a food program, and that dude knows more about bar science than everyone else in the world combined. I mean, he invented the butt funnel for chrissake.

They have darts which is tight, but not while you’re watching football.

6. Dempsey’s (61 2nd Ave)

dempseysnyc Join us tonight at 8pm for Dempsey's Live Traditional Irish Music Session! #dempseysnyc #irishmusic #eastvillage #drinklocal #eastvillageeats #nyc

Dempsey’s is an Irish pub, not a sports bar. They have live Irish music and Guinness which we are super into. However, for some reason, people tend to automatically consider Irish pubs sports bars which simply isn’t the case.

This bar is littered across best sports bar lists and its super perplexing. Once again, just because a bar has flat screens does not mean it’s a sports bar.

Lastly, I’m not the kind of guy who is going to hate on frat bros simply for being frat bros, but if you hate Vineyard Vines button downs and Sperry top-siders then you should probably avoid Dempsey’s.
