Straphangers, an extremely excellent blog that posts articles about public transit in New York City, just released their 2015 State of the Subway report.

For their "what do subway riders want?" category, they reported riders want "short waits, trains that arrive regularly, a chance for a seat, a clean car, and understandable announcements that tell them what they need to know."

This seems pretty self-evident to us, which is probably why these were the parameters Straphangers used to measure subway performance. 

They measured subway performance for NYC's 20 major subway lines by using data compiled by the MTA. Most of this data was gathered in late 2014.

What'd they find out?

Well, some of their conclusive findings aren't all that arresting. We were not, for instance, surprised to learn that the L is still the dirtiest train. We were also unsurprised about the C train's dismal result as "the train that breaks down the most."

In more positive news, the 7 train ranked in as the cleanest subway train, and the overall best line. We love the 7 train, so we weren't blown away by that news either.

What else happened?

Well, the 5 and B trains ranked in as worst overall subway lines. The 5 train performed with the "worst regularity of service," and had the most delays caused by mechanical breakdowns. The B line performed below average on amount of scheduled service, delays, and car announcements.

They also found that the rate of car breakdowns increased from last year's report, a disheartening yet similarly unsurprising finding. Cars' cleanliness remained unchanged since last year's report, and the rate of understandable car announcements declined slightly.

It turns out riders are most likely to get a seat on an F train, and least likely to get a seat on an E train. We've often been piled into a crowded E train with no hope of sitting, so we feel that statistic.

Overall, our conclusion is that the subway needs to get it together, but we're still proud of the 7 train for rocking on. You go 7 train!
