I'll Be Missing You: 7 Times You Really Wished Your Best Friend Lived in NYC

Living in the best city on earth is tough when your best friend doesn't live here too.

Every time you buy a dollar slice, glimpse the skyscrapers glistening on the East River, attend any dope concert, comedy show, or reading, you're met with a complicated array of emotions.

Of course you're having a blast. How could you not?

You live in the most amazing city in America, with the best food, nightlife, and opportunities. New York City's seams are bursting with talent, pretty views, and interesting people.

And yet, you know deep inside your heart that this city would be so much better if your best friend lived here too. Here's why.

1. When you get crazy things delivered to your door

You really miss your best friend most at that ripe 4 a.m. hour when you get delicious Pad Thai delivered practically right to your bedroom.

The only thing that would make that late-night meal taste better is if you were sharing it with your best friend.

You miss her even more when you get a delicious, bubbling bottle of Riesling delivered right when you need it on a Saturday night. No one else besides her understands your white wine obsession.

But when you miss her most is when you get that perfect green, leafy Dazed and Confused goodness brought to your doorstep. Lord knows you two know how to enjoy a good ole joint.

2. When you see your favorite character from your favorite show

Of course you and your best friend obsess over this show together, and when you nearly faint from excitement when you see that character, you know it's not nearly as life-changing as it would be if your best friend had witnessed it by your side.

Whatever lame, replacement NYC friend you're with when you run into your favorite character feigns excitement, but you know it's not the same fainting response your best friend would have had if she'd been here when the run-in occurred.

3. When you have an amazing meal

You and your best friend spent countless years obsessing over pizza, burritos, and loaded French fries.

Since it's common knowledge that NYC has some of the best food in the entire galaxy, you always breath a dejected exhale when you have that first amazing bite of pasta or sushi.

The kind of pasta or sushi you know they don't have where your friend lives.

The sad truth of the matter is that no matter how often you and your best friend FaceTime, you can't split a perfect burrito from Essex Taqueria over FaceTime. So you're stuck just explaining to her how perfect it was, which isn't nearly as fun.

4. When you have a crush

No one knows your romantic taste like your best friend does. She's always the first one to spot a guy from across the sea of a crowded party and exclaim that he's exactly your type.

So when you find a guy on the dance floor at a bar, you're sort of confused if you should kiss him or not. Since you haven't yet gotten your best friend and most important confidant to approve.

The most upsetting thing is when you actually start to like him. How could you ever have actual romantic feelings for someone your best friend hasn't even met?

In the sage words of Tina Fey, how could you know whether you like a guy if you haven't asked your best friend first?

5. When you do touristy things

You're pretty sure your best friend would behave as though she were four years old and it was Christmas morning if she could ever see the carnival of delight that is Smorgasburg.

You know she'd get extremely excited and start sprinting around to try all the food.

You also die a little inside when you sample the free food at Grand Central and your best friend isn't there to share in your joy.

But that's nothing compared to how excited she'd be to scream all the lyrics to both your favorite songs in the front row at a SummerStage concert, or yell out all the words to your favorite movie at Coney Island's Flicks on the Beach.

You did all the touristy things you were supposed to do, but it was with a hole in your heart shaped like your best friend that you did them.

6. When you're hungover

No one knows how to make you feel better when you're bent over and clutching the porcelain gods than your best friend.

There is absolutely no one on the planet besides her who can make you laugh at the same time you're puking.

And you know you wish she was there when you're binging on The Office, 30 Rock or Friends. Because the two of you can quote practically every line to every episode.

Of course you Skype her during this trying time, but it's just not the same.

7. When you're caught up in an intellectual discussion

Any time the conversation switches to society, politics, or gender roles, (which happens way to often in this city) you yearn longingly for your best friend to be standing by your side.

Sure, you're pretty good at holding your own in these discussions, and you have a well-articulated argument for every opinion you hold.

But saying your opinions is not nearly as fun as it would be without your best friend nodding vehemently by your side.
