Welcome to the first full week of September, New York City.
We've got a banger ahead of us, full of dance parties, two-for-one Broadway plays, two Labor Day parades, and the exhilarating feeling of fall in the air.
We've also got an extremely somber day on Friday, which marks the 14th anniversary of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.
We take this day to devote tremendous amounts of respect and honor to those who were killed that day, and those who sacrificed their lives to save others.
We also regard this day with pride in the way New York City came together in the aftermath of this tragedy in which 2,977 loved ones were lost. All of their names are engraved into bronze panels around the Memorial pools' edges and our nation's hearts for all eternity.
So plan to spend the first full week of September honoring the lives we lost, celebrating the imminent arrival of fall, and doing it big with the following events for this week.

This all-out staple of NYC labor day dedicates its colorful parade to promoting, developing, and celebrating Caribbean culture, arts, history, and traditions in NYC.
The parade will also feature a rocking carnival, with thousands of participants, over a million attendees, food vendors, a steel band orchestra, and king and queen of carnival competitions.
Bursting at the seams with jerk chicken and ice cream, this year's parade will rock all the way down the Eastern Parkway on Monday, September 7th. Join, why don't you? There isn't really a better way than this to celebrate Labor Day in NYC.

The Harlem International Film Festival honors dynamic films by anyone, about anything under the sun. Conceived by the idea that we all have unique experiences and perspectives to share, the Hi seeks and exhibits fresh work.
The festival features documentaries, shorts, animation, youth projects, episodic work and music videos.

Opening Night of the festival will show award-winning Stories of Our Lives, which chronicles the queer experience in Kenya for lovers, fighters, rebels, and the community at large.

From 7-10 p.m. on Thursday, the Soho Street Strut will bring art nights back to SoHo with the first ever Street Art Strut. It will be a raging pop-up loft party with eight of NYC's top street artists, an open bar from 7-9 p.m., and the opportunity to purchase art.
There will also be a silent art auction to benefit ACE Programs for the Homeless.
Each artist is also creating her own one-of-a-kind Molsekin notebook, all of which will be for sale. All of the proceeds from these sales will benefit ACE Programs for the Homeless. Every ticket gets its purchaser their own Moleskin notebook.

On this day of solemnity and solitude, there are a number of ways to remember, respect, and honor those who died in the attacks on the World Trade Centers 14 years ago.
"When you choose to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11, you are playing an important part in memorializing those who were killed, honoring the sacrifices of the first responders, and remembering the spirit of unity that emerged in the aftermath of 9/11," said Joe Daniels, President and CEO of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.

Beginning at 3 p.m. on September 11th, the 9/11 Memorial will be open to the public for a special viewing of Tribute in Light, which provides a meaningful vantage point of the annual tribute. The Memorial will remain open until midnight.
Whatever any of us wind up doing, it'll be with the 2,977 people who were killed that day alight in our hearts.
Saturday, September 12th
6. Labor Day Parade (5th Avenue from 44th-64 Streets)
If you didn't get enough of Labor Day last weekend, never fear. The parade exploding down 5th Avenue from September 12th at 10 a.m. will absolutely keep the party going.
Marchers will parade from 44th Street to 64th Street on Saturday in celebration of everyone who keeps NYC going; from bus drivers to teachers to supermarket employees to doctors.
7. 90s Fest (50 Kent Avenue)
Do you love wearing fanny packs, dancing your butt off, and pretending it's the 90s? Do you get so extremely excited when you listen to Tonic, Suga Ray, and Smash Mouth? Yeah, we do too.
If the above sounds like your idea of a good time, then get yourself to the 90s Fest in the heart of Brooklyn. This dope jam session will go down on September 12th from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

What bands will be playing from the best decade of the century? Well, we're here to tell you, and make sure you're sitting down.

Sunday, September 13th
8. Hedwig And The Angry Inch Closing (111 West 44th Street)
If Week 1 of the NFL's 50th Season and "The Warriors" showing in Coney Island don't excite you, here's another option: Hedwig and the Angry Inch's last day on Broadway is Sunday, September 13th at the Balasco Theatre. (That's right, just in time for Broadway week.)
The Tony Award winning show, which stars Taye Diggs in its title role, is performing its final show at the Belasco Theater after a long run which included 22 previews and 506 regular performances.
It's a rock musical about an "internationally ignored" East German singer who was victim to a botched sex-change surgery who moves to America in the decade after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It's stunning, and tickets are two-for-one. Get them here.
