Sometimes opposites attract, sometimes they don’t. 

If you’re a New Yorker, chances are you either love Miami or despise it, and the same goes for Miamians when asked about the Big Apple.

But regardless, these cities still show a sense of appreciation toward each other-- probably because they are so completely different.

  Both have unique distinctions that make them what they are: major travel destinations where some of the most eclectic people call home.

Maybe we aren’t so different after all...? 

Nah, we’re just playing. Take a look at just how different these cities really are.

1. Fashion

Brighter is always better in Miami, but bedazzled is the best. However, if jewel-encrusted jeans aren’t your thing, you can take the half-naked route. Who doesn’t want to ride their bike in a thong?

And while Miami’s style is well, intriguing, we can’t ignore the fact New York City is the fashion capital of the world.

Whether it’s high-end designer duds or rocking out cool hand-me-down consignment bargains, the trendsetters here know how to work it.

Of course, there’s occasional half-naked attractions here, too like the infamous Naked Cowboy, but regardless, New York City still comes out on top on this one.

2. Pizza

We’ll give it to Miami for mastering some killer Cuban cuisine, but when it comes to pizza, it’s a whole other story. If it’s not dripping with grease, it’s topped with over-the-top toppings (from pork belly to fried oysters) to help divert from the soggy dough.

And sure, extravagant toppings can be fun, but when it boils down to it, the best kind of pizza is the simplest.

New York City does it right with its classic sauce and cheese (and occasional pepperoni) baked to perfection so it’s not too greasy to pick it up (and fold it).

3. Climate

New York City has the awesome four seasons to enjoy, including warm summers and crispy autumns. Seriously, nothing beats that foliage found in Central Park.

But then winter hits and after the 15th snowstorm, it’s anything but delightful.

And that’s where Miami comes in. Sure, the summers are awful with constant fog of humidity, but winters?

Pure paradise. 

With swaying palm trees, ocean breezes and temps in the high 60s/low 70s, there’s no other place we’d rather be-- especially with all that snow up north.

4. Punctuality

If you’re meeting someone at 8 p.m. in Miami, don’t expect to seem them until 8:45 p.m. or 9 p.m. (at the earliest).

This is because the Miami folks run on “Latin Time” and don’t rush for anything-- fire, work, and especially not dinner dates as the average “supper time” is around 9 or 10 p.m. (not even including Latin Time).

But in New York City, people are always on the move. If you’re leisurely strolling the streets, then you clearly don’t live here because the locals have places to be and always arrive on time.

Unlike Miami, if a New Yorker has to be somewhere at 9 a.m., they will be-- possibly even a tad bit early.

5. Skylines

Watching the sun set over a big body of water lined with tall buildings is absolutely picturesque.

These two cities both have stunning views with breathtaking skies that it’s hard not to get lost in them, which makes it pretty much impossible to decide which is better.

Whether you catch the sun beaming over the river in New York City or see the pink sky set over the bay in Miami, both are equally exquisite and worth a tie.

6. Architecture

There are so many beautiful historic and quaint buildings in New York City. The best part is the people here really take pride in the architecture and want to keep these buildings around.

Now, when it comes to Miami, it may have some cool Art Deco buildings, but most of the boutique hotels and old school buildings are being demolished with cloned luxury hotels and condos taking up their space. 

Is there really a need for a Ritz-Carlton to be built directly next door to a Four Seasons and a Fendi Chateau?

We don’t think so; give us a charming brownstone any day.

7. Priorities

Having a big brain goes a long way in New York City. People care about where you came from, what college (and grad school) you went to, and what your career is. 

Striving to be better is a commendable quality here.

But in Miami, no one necessarily gets excited over a big brain. It’s the big trust fund, or better yet, the big (fake) boobs that get everyone aroused.

So yes, if you look at the scoreboard right about now, it's a landslide. The rest of the world really needs to accept that we're the greatest city in the world.

New York City might be our number one squeeze, but we can’t deny a sweet spot for Miami because of its vibrant scene and tropical climate. 

All that being said, talk to us in mid-February and NYC is digging out from the last snowstorm. At that point in time, there might not be any comparison.
