Since you live in New York City, you've definitely seen the map of the subway. It's everywhere-- plastered on the walls of every train and in every subway station.

You're probably all too familiar with the subway's flat, one-dimensional routes sprawled on top of a background that's, well... a map.

If you're really legit, you're probably even memorized the subway's routes, and can easily imagine its slopes and turns on its background.

Now, Tumblr user Arnorrian superimposed the subway's routes on top of an aerial photograph of New York City. 

So you can see a bird's-eye view of each subway line's colored twists and turns amidst NYC's real trees, buildings, and streets.

The result is artistically stunning and technologically impressive. It's dizzying to imagine how many people trek NYC's streets while below ground thousands more rush through its subway tunnels.

This map really shows us the scope and scale of NYC's subway aside this city's buildings, parks, and rivers.

Anorrian's also included the PATH and New Jersey Transit lines, the 7 line's extension, and the first phase of the 2nd Avenue Subway.

We'd like to thank Anorrian for opening our eyes to the reality of our near-magical transportation system's trajectory.
