We’re not sure about you guys, but summer in New York is our absolute favorite.
Not only is it warm enough to break out our beach gear, but it’s the perfect time to sneak away from Manhattan and embark on one last summer road trip.
With the summer dwindling away ever so quickly into the dreaded rearview, we’re looking for ways to sneak out of the concrete jungle and into less populated, and more, well, natural settings.
Especially with Labor Day just ahead.
Whether it’s finding solitude on a hike upstate or going to surf out on a nearby beaches, there’s so much to do in not only New York, but around the tri-state area, as well.
So go. Get out of here while you still can. Fall is about to break out into its painfully brief happy dance, and then, before you know, winter will be here.
1. Atlantic City, New Jersey

With a lengthy boardwalk, an amusement park, and crazy good bars and restaurants, Atlantic City is the city to be in if you’re looking to get your tan on during the day and then head out to get a little crazy at the bar later that night.

If you’re also feeling a little rowdy and are not afraid to gamble some money away, hit up some of Atlantic City’s casinos.
Hotels in the area also tend to come pretty cheap, so you’ll have a little extra cash to play around with, too.
2. Lake Minnewaska, New York
For those more interested in heading out of NYC to check out nature at its finest, taking the ride up to the Catskill’s Lake Minnewaska may just be the perfect getaway for you.
In just a bit over a two-hour drive from Manhattan, Lake Minnewaska is a nature-lover’s paradise. It has everything that makes the perfect end-of-summer trip; hiking, biking and kayaking are among the ton of things you can do there.
If you’re craving even more time outdoors, you can also reserve a spot at the Lake’s campgrounds for easy access to everything the grounds have to offer.
Did we also mention that you’d be absolutely stunned by the breathtaking views there? The scenery at Lake Minnewaska is absolutely gorgeous, and trust us, seeing it in person is incredible and will definitely be the inspiration for your next Insta-post.
3. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Only a three-ish hour drive from the city, Philadelphia should definitely be one of your next road trip destinations. Most people typically know Philly for its historic museums, and while the history’s absolutely there if you’re looking for it, the city offers so much more than that.
Their art scene is off the charts, and both the Magic Gardens and The Barnes Collection may be some of the coolest places you’ll get to see.
If art’s not you’re scene and you’re looking for something a little more lively, check out Philly’s Penn’s Landing, where you’ll find food (and beer!) trucks, boating, and hammocks to hang out in after exploring the area for a bit.
South Philly’s food game is also on point and it’s there you’ll find Green Eggs Café-- one of the best brunch spots in the city.
4. Block Island, Rhode Island
Most people have never heard of Block Island, and that right there, that’s a good thing. This small island off of the coast of Long Island’s Montauk is one of those untouched paradises that you don’t find too often.
While the island has a whopping population number of 1,000 throughout the year, city dwellers like us flock here for the perfect island vacation. While the ferry to the island is kind of pricey, the trip is absolutely worth it.

Seriously stunning overlooks of the Atlantic and a small cove where you can find hiking, biking, boating, and kayaking make the trip more than worth it.
Also, for a quick traveller’s tip, try renting a moped when you get off the ferry. It comes pretty cheap and makes it super easy to get around the entire island fairly quickly.
5. Montauk, NY
Potentially a stop on your road trip out to Block Island, Long Island’s southernmost end is home to some of New York’s best beaches.
If you’re in the mood for a trip on the outdoorsy side, Hither Hills Campground offers camping right on the beach where you’ll be able to simply wake up, grab your board, and head out.
You’ll definitely want to stop at The Surf Lodge while you’re out there. Located on Fort Pond, this lodge is known to be one of the best hidden gems of Montauk. With a late night bar scene, bonfires, and rooms with lake views and hammocks, this place can’t be beat.
It’s also where the wellness brand Well + Good are currently holding their Surfside Salutations workshops throughout the summer, so be sure to check out their events at the Lodge, too.
