But we do have are museums, vintage stores, record shops, and shoe shiners. And they will remind you of the past. When life was simpler. 

Now read on to find out 9 things you can do to reminisce about the good ol' days in NYC.

1. Visit the New York Transit Museum (Boerum and Schermerhorn Street - Brooklyn Heights)

What's a better way to remember the past than by visiting the largest museum in the U.S. devoted to urban public transportation history?

Using exhibitions, tours, and workshops, the New York Transit Museum throws it back to the cultural, social, and technological history of the subway system of the past.

So if you want to travel back in time, and you're pretty bummed that time machines still haven't been invented yet, come to the New York Transit Museum. 

It's only $7, and while we wait for scientists to figure out time travel, it's the next best thing.

2. Party with us at "The Dopest TBT Ever" (Hudson Terrace - 621 West 46th Street)

3. Eat at Delmonico's (56 Beaver Street)

Delmonico's just oozes history. They invented the future of American restaurants, they've been around since 1827, and they created delicacies like the New York Steak, Lobster Newberg, Oysters Rockefeller, and Baked Alaska.

Likely, if you grew up in NYC, you've already eaten at Delmonico's. You probably have memories of heading to Delmonico's on birthdays, graduations, and other celebratory occasions.

It's okay to drop some dough on nostalgia. The past shimmers, we get it. So go have a steak at Delmonico's and ignore the number on the check for once, will ya?

4. Visit the VideoRoom (1403 3rd Avenue)

Ahh, VHS. Do you remember that good ol' VCR machine? Do you remember when Blockbuster ruled the movie watching scene? 

This was way before OnDemand, Netflix and Hulu were things. We're talking about when you had to actually sit and rewind a video to get it back to the beginning.

Now here's the more important question: do you still have a VCR?

If so, great. If not, don't fret. Movie-watching history hasn't been lost on VideoRoom, who've been open since 1978 and still carry a catalog of over 12,000 VHS and DVD titles. They specialize in classic, foreign, and hard-to-find films.

5. Shine your shoes at Tony's Shoe Repair (208 West 35th Street)

In retrospect, getting your shoes shined and repaired is a thing of the past.

Luckily, Tony's has been around for 81 years, and has passed through the hands of three generations. Is there any way to retain the mindset of better days gone by than getting yourself some shiny effin' shoes?

Jeremiah's Vanishing New York called Tony's Shoe Repair "the kind of place where the shine men chat amiably amongst themselves, old friends who have been there forever."

So if you're yearning to ponder the past, Tony's Shoe Repair is as good a place as any to do it. And the best part is, you'll leave with clean, slick shoes.

6. Hit up your local bodega

Bodegas, which are grievously being overrun by 7-Elevens and closing to due high rents, radiate history in NYC.

Gail Victoria Braddock Quagliata is a photographer in Brooklyn who's taking it upon herself to capture a photo of every bodega in Manhattan. 

She told Jeremiah's Vanishing New York York that when she first moved to NYC from Chicago, "bodegas were among the first features [she] appreciated as unique to this city."

So yeah, everyone knows bodegas are near and dear to New Yorker's hearts. At bodegas, you can buy sandwiches and shampoo and pork rinds and yucca. There's an online hip hop magazine called Brooklyn Bodega and a rock club in Bushwick was named Bodega.

Bottom line is, they matter to us. They're a little piece of history. Now go have yourself a sandwich at one.

7. Grab a brew at McSorley's (17 East 7th Street)

McSorley's is not only a famous Irish bar upon which all other Manhattan bars found their inspiration. It is not just a staple of NYC life that's been around and kicking since 1854.

And they don't just have some of the most delicious, crunchy French fries in all of the city, plus amazing homemade sandwiches, soups and burgers.

It's that we're pretty sure they haven't raised their prices at all since the who-knows-when. You can drink two beers, eat a sandwich and French fries at McSorley's all for just like, $12. 

So if you want to remember the city before inflation, stop by. You won't regret it.

8. Shop at Mr. Throwback Vintage Store (428 East 9th Street)

But do you truly remember the glory days of the 90s?

Because Mr. Throwback Vintage Store does. They specialize in vintage sportswear, sneakers, Starter jackets, NBA Champion jerseys, snapbacks, toys, and video games.

9. The Rise of Sneaker Culture Exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum (200 Eastern Parkway) 

This exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum is open for our nostalgic delight until October 4th.

Sneakers, which have become a global obsession, have been evolving ever since the mid-nineteenth century. The Rise of Sneaker Culture is the first to exhibit the trajectory of this evolution and all the social and cultural history that influenced the sneaker's rise to greatness.

The exhibition includes approximately 150 pairs of sneakers, including some of the very first sneakers ever.

And yes, they have sneakers from the 90s. Do you remember that pair of Jordans you had that made all your neighbors jealous?
