We all have mixed feelings about the New York City subway. Almost everybody agrees that it's too expensive and not reliable enough. It's kind of like paying for spotty phone coverage. 

Much like those "heart trees" in Game of Thrones, subway stations are something we're drawn to out of tradition, necessity, and superstition against the bus. 

We have all undertaken an epic pilgrimage quest to the "closest" subway station at one time or another. 

With something like that in mind, Chris Wong has made a "subway desert" map laying out all the places throughout NYC that are farther than 500 meters or about .3 miles from the subway.

To make this feat of cartography, Christopher "Columbus" Wong (that's not his actual nick name, but we hope it is now... ) simply blued out 500 meters around every subway station on the map. 

Now, you might have to look at the maps for a second before it clicks. 

Using contrasting colors to show what's a body of water and what's within 500 meters of a subway would have been better than going all blue. 

But once you see it, you see it. 

Once the map sinks in, you'll probably notice that a lot of people you know who have a car lives in one of the areas colored white-- that is, where the subway isn't conveniently close by.  

Duh, right?
