New Yorkers are a different breed of people. That's just the truth.
When you zoom out of our lives and consider the way we behave compared with the rest of America, you'll get pretty alarmed.
Because normal Americans get worked up about things like rats and emergency exits. And we just don't.
The most heinous occurrences do not so much as unnerve us, because we deal with a disgusting amount of things in our personal space, all day long. So yeah, we're used to a lot.
Now read on and find out 22 legit signs you're a true New Yorker. How many can you cross off the list?
1. You know most subway station exit doors don't really have any alarms

Only transplants fear exiting subway stations through doors rather than turnstiles. If you're a real New Yorker, you've become less and less trepidatious about using the push door on the subway.
[anad]
A true New Yorker will get off the subway and without missing a beat, push their way out of the emergency exit.
It's way better that those absurd turnstiles.
2. You know street carts are disgusting
But you eat from them anyway. Because they're delicious, obviously.
3. Getting cut off doesn't faze you
zombi3love Nope. Just my face. #TrueStory #WorkFlow #MondaysForYou #LucyProblems #RestingBitchFace #ItsJustMyFace #NotMad #Food #Hungry #Chilling #ThugLife
When you first moved here, you probably got furious when cars and bikes cut you off in the crosswalk.
You were beside yourself when people stopped walking in front of you, and had vivid fantasies about ripping off their heads.
Now, if a bike cuts you off when it's your turn to walk, you don't miss a beat. You've become a pro at pivoting to the right when someone cuts you off at the subway turnstile.
And these occasions don't affect you emotionally anymore. You expect them.
4. Block parties were and still are a thing every summer
Some of your fondest childhood memories are drinking lemonade and grilling with your neighbors on your block.
So, whenever possible, you make this happen nowadays. Because block parties are super special-- and always will be.
5. Your MetroCard comes out of your wallet automatically
gourmetrd Próxima parada 🚊 42 calle y 8 Av! . Nuestra fiel compañera 7 días Unlimited #MetroCard 😁 #GourmetRDenNYC #GourmetRDenNYC_Tips
The days when you had to pause in front of the turnstile and shuffle through your bag, pull out your wallet and grab your MetroCard, and then swipe your card and pass onto the subway are long gone.
Getting out your MetroCard card is as much as an autonomic function for you as digesting your food or pumping your blood.
You blink in confusion when your comrades stop to pull out their cards, and you look down and yours is already in your hand. Because you didn't remember getting it out.

Wait, so fire hydrants aren't public pools?
7. You don't use apps to get around
a.prentiss Have I mentioned I've got crazy mad mapping skills? #navigatingNYC #thebigapple #auditions #wheredoigo #icandothis #actorslife
You know you have to get off at Bleecker Street to transfer to the F or M trains. You know you can switch to the E train at 51st Street. You're aware of every street where there's a crosstown bus and every street where there's a downtown bus.
You know that 1st Avenue runs uptown and 2nd Avenue runs downtown. You know that Central Park ends at 59th Street, so if you're walking crosstown at night you have to get below 58th Street.
Basically, you know your way around.
8. You dated someone for their in-apartment washing machine
ajnatty I'm SuperWashingMachine ! Or their rooftop view, their cat, their doorman, or because their apartment was close to your work.
It's okay to admit. We've all done it.
9. You stopped arriving on time. For anything
You're done being the loser who gets anywhere on time and has to wait fifteen minutes for everyone to show up.

yonaaht #needmoneyforweed #hamburg #hambourg #shanze #same #weed #money #grafiti #l4l #f4f #like4like #follow4follow #likeback #likealways
You're thrown off by the fact you've heard the same guy give the exact same speech twelve different times.
[anad2]
You can hardly imagine how many times he's said it in total.
But still, he's different than the grimeball who's not really homeless and who's just raking in the twenties.
There's no actual discerning feature to distinguish them, it's more like a gut feeling. You've been scammed before, so you can tell them apart; that's all you know.
11. You barely remember how to drive a car
less_than_laurie Way to park like a jackass... #jackass #terribledriver #terribleparking #rangeroverasshole
And when you do find yourself behind the wheel of a car (outside Manhattan, of course), you experience a succession of emotions.
You're first overwhelmed with a surge of euphoria at the freedom in front of you. This euphoria quickly edges to panic, because you're sure you're going to hit the car next to you.
Then, you're confused. How could people drive these metal death-boxes daily?
Finally, you remember that the subway kills people too.
,12. You've sprained your back at least once while shoveling snow

13. You believe in clipboard peoples' causes. But you still don't stop to listen. Ever.
You might be a rampant feminist, but when a girl with a clipboard wearing a Planned Parenthood t-shirt shouts, "Help us win reproductive rights!"...
[anad]
It doesn't slow you down. Of course you believe in reproductive rights, but, you're late for drinks with your friend. And you were late last time, so you really don't want to be late again.
You placate yourself with the notion that you'll stand up for women's rights by posting a Facebook status later.
14. You have no problem going into a bodega at 3 a.m. for a sandwich
beingbenpeterson A healthy bodega! #nosmoking #wehavesalad #nyclife #nycbodega #nyc #healthfood #21dayfix

If you had one meal left on earth, you would seriously consider that BLT from your local spot.

acg.fitchic Or unfollowed me and still creeping....IDGAF buh-bye #seeya #dontcare #hatersloveyouthemost #hatersareyourbiggestfans
And you've given up trying to see them. You now know it'll never happen.
There are certain friends you hang out with, and certain friends you're perpetually saying, "Let's hang out soon!"
And you've stopped kidding yourself. You know "Let's hang out soon soon!" is a euphemism for "We're never hanging out."
16. Bird and dog poop don't bother you whatsoever
Ever have a pigeon poop on you? Congrats. How about step in dog poop. Even better.
And you're over the rats and roaches thing, too.
You're very "Eh," about running into those creatures. Because this is NYC. Act accordingly, right?
17. You're always rushing
And when you find that you're on time, it confuses you. You don't really know how to handle it. You're constantly battling an anxiety that you should be rushing even when you don't need to.
So naturally, you procrastinate right until the brink of when you leave. And the fact that you're rushing is relieving.
18. You're used to lots of walking

You speed walk two to three miles every day and it doesn't bother you at all. You never get out of breath.
This fact makes you feel wonderfully superior to everyone who doesn't live in this city.
19. Mister Softee's jingle still makes your heart skip a beat
edmholicaman #dreams #bigbmdreams #enough #likeforme #likeforpic #likeforlike #likefordreams #followme #followforlike #followforfollow #loveforlove #hateforhate #okayokay #bye 🙋✌
This hurtles you right back to the nostalgia of your childhood, sprinting after that truck in the middle of the street.
And even though you were once catcalled by a guy driving a Mister Softee truck, the magic still lingers.
20. You've been jumped
dontheollie Paula the warrior queen #sword #swordfighting #queen #fantasy #warrior #summer #girlfriend #bootful #loveher #woman

But truth be told. If you ever see that guy again, he will definitely get his ass handed to him. .
21. You're very nonchalant about seeing celebrities
The splendor of celebrities has long since faded for you.
[anad2]
You're very aware that celebrities are people too, who are just getting through their day. You might see your absolute favorite celebrity on the street, and you won't even go up to him or her.
Who has the time, right?
22. You know where to go for the very best food
And you know you'll never go to Times Square unless you're seeing a Broadway show or meeting up with someone from out of town.
And you have a favorite place for pizza, bagels, soft pretzels, and Chinese food. Your diet consists of rotating these places, and you wouldn't have it any different.
