We work hard. We play hard. But we definitely don’t get enough sleep.
These are all pretty much proven facts. Let’s be real, we’ve all been caught in the midst of a narcoleptic-head bobbing episode at the office.
Picture this: a warm, quiet, cozy spot to curl up for a power nap mid day where you wake up refreshed and ready to tackle the remainder of the work day.
Yeah right. Ok, back to reality. This doesn’t exist, especially in New York City, that is, unless you're super creepy at Starbucks, or work from home.
Alas, here’s our compilation of places to catch a wink around the city, and perhaps your best chance to make that dream come true.
Pun intended.
1. Hudson River Park (Pier 63 & 64 - West 24th Street)
Secure your own little piece of property, and relax straight up on the grass in the park that skirts the Hudson River.
Feel the breeze, soak in some sun, close your eyes, and almost forget you’re in the city. Almost.
2. Barnes and Noble (various NYC locations)
Hunt down a location that still exists as an actual real, live book store, and find a nice little corner of books that nobody reads. Perhaps in the Philosophy section? Just sayin.
3. Central Park (59th Street and 5th Avenue)
Ok, this one might seem pretty obvious. A haven in the city like this can’t be ignored.
The sheer size of the park, coupled with the nooks and crannies, leave endless opportunities to curl up amongst some city wildlife just like Snow White.
4. Macy's (34th Street - Herald Square)
Two words: Furniture. Section. Make sure to be discreet, and keep in mind that mirrored sunglasses can only help you here. If anyone asks, you're just a serious buyer fully testing out the comfort level of each piece. For about fifteen minutes each.
5. Southwest Porch at Bryant Park (41 West 40th Street)
vincenz_ Chillen in Bryant parking on this gorgeous New York night. I love this city! #nyc #manhattan #love #friends #drinks #summernights #yes #happy #simple #southwestporch #bryantpark #contest @southwestair #chaching #tickets #hookitup! 😊
Middle of crazy midtown. Comfy chairs. And, because you’re that tired, this spot does wonders.
Bonus points? You can grab a coffee post Z's to give yourself that extra push to get through your day. If you provide lounge chairs...we will sleep.
6. New York Public Library (various NYC locations)
It's pretty much widely accepted that studying college students are napping here at any given moment, so just pretend you’re an overtired student.
If someone stern wakes you up, abruptly rise, yelling something incoherent about pie graphs and Shakespeare.
Tip: make sure to set your alarm so as to not wake up three hours later in a puddle of drool. Because, gross.
,7. Paley Park (3 East 53rd Street)
pps_placemaking In case you missed it, we now have plazas and parks on our Great Public Spaces page! You can browse the excellent examples we have so far and submit your own favorite place too! Go to pps.org/places/ for more. (Pictured here: Paley Park in our very own New York City. Picture yourself in a jungle. Ok, it’s a concrete jungle, with a man made waterfall, but still. Stay with us here.
Sanctuary in the city. Refresh yourself with the soothing sounds of a man made city waterfall. Just make sure to set your alarm, as the waterfall is sure to drown out at least some of the city noise.
8. TGI Fridays (various NYC locations)
Stick with us here. Let’s be honest, this place might just be empty enough to work.
Also, endless appetizers is a real thing here, so they can’t kick you out. Just nod off for a brief interlude during the mozzarella stick course, and nobody will be the wiser. Plus, mozzarella sticks.
9. The Atrium at 590 Madison Avenue
This indoor sanctum provides the perfect power nap retreat, complete with trees in abundance.
Never mind the numerous people milling about shoving sandwiches in their mouths whilst chatting endlessly on their cellphones. All the more reason you'll blend in.
10. Massage parlor (various NYC locations)

Half hour massage at one of those cheap Chinatown spots = perfect nap opportunity.
No need for strategy or excuses because a face down rub down is a totally acceptable place to fall asleep.
11. Whole Foods (various NYC locations)
The trick here is to buy yourself a turkey sandwich. Stay with us for a second. It's bound to be busy on account that it's Whole Foods, so find yourself a table, act casual, and have a snooze.
If you get caught, and scolded, refer back to the turkey sandwich. Everyone knows that turkey makes you sleepy. BLAME THE TURKEY. See what we did there?
