If you're on the road, in an airport, or for whatever reason stuck in some other horrible city across the country and your stomach starts grumbling, your options for good eats are probably limited. 

Actually, they're definitely limited. 

But this is New York City. New. York. City. 

You're not on the road, you're on the streets and there's no excuse to frequent those terrible, horrendous, corny-ass chain restaurants you would probably have to settle for elsewhere. 

So yeah, you probably read our first piece on this very topic. If not, get on it.

Now, we're back with part two, 5 more authentic alternatives to those fast food dumps scattered across NYC. We hope you're taking some notes.

1. Denny's

Alternative: Diner (85 Broadway - Brooklyn), Tina's Place (1002 Flushing Avenue - Brooklyn)

Part of the appeal to Denny's is that they are generally open 24/7, but this is 'The City that Never Sleeps.' We invented 24/7. Bottom line is, when you go to Denny's, you're settling for a fake diner. Go to a real diner instead.

For a fanciful and elevated yet chill experience, check out Diner in Williamsburg. Or for a way less expensive-- yet fully legit late-night diner outing-- try Tina's Place in Bushwick. Heads up though, they're only open from 3:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

2. Applebee's

Alternative: The Palm (837 2nd Avenue) 

What is Applebee's? They have "American food." What, like steaks? 

Ok, so instead of going there, go to one of the zillions of proper steakhouses in NYC. One classic-- perhaps one of the most classic-- is The Palm. 

At the moment, this old school spot (which happens to be their original location) is under renovations for the first time in 90 years. But you can still hop across the street and soak in the same quintessential NYC steakhouse vibe at Palm Too.

3. Olive Garden

Alternative: Roberto's (603 Crescent Avenue), Dominick's (2335 Arthur Avenue)

If there was a perfect example of Italian food for people who don't understand Italian food, or even Italian-American food, it would definitely be Olive Garden. Ask anybody around. 

And in this city, it is an especially inexcusable, shameful, and regretful sin not to avoid them at all costs. In lieu of that inevitably disappointing experience, do yourself a favor and go to up to the Real Little Italy in the Bronx.

Seek out Roberto’s at 603 Crescent Avenue, right off Arthur Avenue, for an incredible Southern Italian inspired meal. Dominick's, directly on Arthur Avenue, is a traditional family-style restaurant that's just about as legit as they come in the neighborhood. 

They're destination spots for tourists and locals alike, but that's no accident. It's because they really are that good.

4. Chili's

Alternative: Mission Catina (172 Orchard Street) 

It's supposed to be Mexican food, but nobody's really sure. Here in the city, it's just not right to eat at Chili's when the range of Latin cuisine is boundless.

If you're sticking to Mexican, go with $3 to $4 tequila shots at the proper street-side taco carts (just ask your taco cart people-- we assume you have taco cart people-- and you'll definitely be pleasantly surprised too).

For a mind blowing sit-down Mexican spot, try Mission Cantina for shnazzed-up versions of classic dishes on the Lower East Side.

5. Buffalo Wild Wings

Alternative: Croxley's (various NYC locations)

Looking for a miserable place to go? Look no further than Buffalo Wild Wings.

But if you're looking for a place that's not full of idiots, but only really good wing specials, hear us out.

Allow yourself the pleasure of going to one of the Croxley's around the city for their incredibly-tasting wings. 

They have a sweet selection of sauces and what not, not too bro-ey, plus you can watch the game and get your drink on.
