Victory has been earned. 

Yesterday, Governor Cuomo's Fast Food Wage Board voted unanimously to raise the minimum wage for fast food workers to $15/hour. 

But, it's not going to happen all at once.

The increase in New York City will be gradual, and minimum wage will increase every year. 

It'll be $9.75 by this December, $10.75 by the end of 2016, and will increase by about a dollar every year thereafter. 

Minimum wage won't be required to be $15/hour in NYC until December 31st, 2018. That minimum is mandated to extend to the rest of New York State by July 1st, 2021.

"This reflects that businesses need to digest this increase, and be able to plan for it," board member Kevin Ryan stated.

As for the fact that NYC's minimum wage is increasing faster than the rest of the state, board member and Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said, "Things like rent and subway fares impact the higher cost of living in New York City."

We think that's about the most obvious statement anyone has ever made, but we're still stoked that fast food workers are one step closer to basic survival in the concrete jungle that is NYC.

We've been posting good news about New York City's airports lately. You can now fly directly from New York City to Cuba, and you can also lounge on JFK's new rooftop deck.

But now, for some not-so-good news.

More than 1,000 airport workers, including security guards, baggage handlers, and wheelchair attendants, plan to strike on Wednesday at JFK and LaGuardia Airports, according to NBC.

Workers say they were illegally threatened and their rights were violated by their subcontractor, Aviation Safeguards, after they organized for higher wages and benefits.

This all happened while they were doing subcontracted work for Delta Airlines.

The Service Employees International Union said the strike will begin at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, as picket lines will be set up at both airports.

So could you guys please get it together? We mean, everyone needs to eat, right? 

Their modest demand is a $15/hour wage, which we find way more than reasonable in NYC. We suspect someone would need at least that amount to survive in this expensive city.

And airport workers aren't the only ones making less than $15/hour in this town.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Governor Cuomo will formally recommend paying all fast food workers, statewide, $15/hour this week. 

This would nearly double the current per hour minimum in New York, which is $8.75. The only step left, according to Grubstreet, is a go-ahead from Acting Labor Commissioner Mario Musolino. Once Mulolino's consent is obtained, Cuomo can move forward-- regardless of the Legislature's opinion.

If legislation is passed, it would equate to a big raise for New York's fast-food employees.

"We're all scared, I have to admit," one of Burger King's four co-owners told The Wall Street Journal. "We in the New York market are very, very concerned that a lot of us may not survive over the next year."

Cuomo, however, says they can afford it. Grubstreet reported it's currently costing the city $700 million annually to subsidize these workers who get paid non-livable wages.

Either way, we predict both airport and fast food employees will somehow, someway get much closer to making a reasonable amount of money to survive in this city.
