Now, for some rather... fishy news (sorry):
NYC's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has decreed that starting in August, most of the raw fish you eat in NYC restaurants - sashimi, tuna tartare, ceviche, and other delicious dishes - will have to be frozen before served.
Does that mean you need to rush out this July, overindulge in raw fish dishes, exceed your raw fish threshold, and get completely sick of these delicacies come August? We don't think so, actually.
This is undoubtedly good news, considering the law was penned in order to kill off bacteria and parasites, according to CBS. Do you want to eat a spicy tuna roll with parasites in it? We most certainly thought not.
We have the utmost trust that the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has all of our best interests at heart. Which means they definitely wouldn't want to infringe on the deliciousness of our sushi.
Also, James Versocki, counsel for the New York State Restaurant Association, said there are exceptions to the frozen fish rule. "Most sushi that restaurants serve are not impacted by this. You know your yellow and bluefin and tuna, they're allowed to be served raw because they don't generally have these parasites in them," Versocki said.
Versocki also said other exotic fish are, as a matter of fact, frozen at the source. Apparently that's been a restaurant industry secret unearthed just in time to make NYers sigh with relief that we'll still get to eat delicious fish, and that these delicious fish will have less bacteria that could make us sick.
So... wanna meet up for sushi later?
