This Friday, celebrations are in order for Americans, soccer fans, and feminists alike.

In a huge burst of victory for U.S. Women's Soccer, and women all over, New York City will hold a ticker-tape parade to celebrate the U.S. Women's Soccer team's World Cup victory.

This is the first time in over fifty years that female athletes will be honored in this way. And as usual, NYC is leading the way.

Yesterday, Mayor de Blasio's office announced plans for the parade. It will be held this Friday and will begin at 11 a.m. The march will proceed up Broadway, from the Battery to City Hall. This route is typically known as the Canyon of Heroes.

The last female athlete to earn this honor was Olympic figure skater Carol Heiss Jenkins, who won a gold medal in 1960, according to the Alliance for Downtown New York.

The U.S. Women's Soccer Team is the first female sports team that will be celebrated in the Canyon of Heroes with a confetti parade.

Those who want a shot at attending the special program at City Hall should visit nyc.gov/parade, or call 311 on Wednesday between 2 and 4 p.m. to sign up.
