Happy Bobby Bonilla Day! Can You Believe a Former Mets Player Makes a Million Dollars Every July 1st for Doing Nothing?

Bobby Bonilla is 53 years old and hasn't played major league baseball since 2001, but that really doesn't matter when the calendar turns to July 1st.

That's because every July 1st since 2011 Bonilla is paid $1,193,248.20 by the New York Mets.

How and why is that possible, you might be asking yourself?

It's due to a buyout prior to the 2000 baseball season, the final year of Bonilla's contract with the Mets, in which he was owed $5.8 million dollars.

Instead of paying Bonilla that amount, the brilliant Mets decided to buy him out and, instead, pay him approximately $1.2 million dollars every year starting in 2011.

How long does the circus continue? Oh, you know, just every year until 2035!

While they may have been in the World Series last year, got Jose Reyes back this year, and overall look pretty good, Bonilla still overshadows whatever success the Mets could ever have.

So, Happy Bobby Bonilla Day to Bobby Bonilla.
