7 Summertime Weekend Activities That Don't Include Drinking in NYC

Everyone loves going to bars and drinking. Or, at least it seems that way since we all do it.

Every weekend, we shove ourselves into Fiddlesticks and Hair of the Dog, spend all of our money on whiskey, spend our nights puking and eating dollar pizza, and spend our dawns in bed with strangers.

Then, the next day we all face down skyscrapers of regret as tall as The Empire State Building. Yes, we know that's a bold statement. The tower of regret really is that tall.

So who needs it? We're not saying don't ever go to a bar again because that would be pure insanity.

(Unless you're a recovering alcoholic, which then we totally and completely with you on.)

We're just saying, everything in moderation.

So this weekend, why don't you try an activity that doesn't include drinking?

And if you're flabbergasted right now and wondering what activity that's not a bar you could possibly come up with, we've compiled a handy list for you below. Now go have some fun, you crazy kid you.

1. Fornino's (Brooklyn Bridge Park - Pier 6)

lisenhour Brooklyn, you just keep getting better and better. #bikedayinbrooklyn #brooklynbridgepark #forninos #beachesinbrooklyn

This famous wood-fired oven pizza isn't just a good idea because it's amazing pizza.

Even though it is, obviously, amazing pizza. It's located on Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 6. Which means it's on a wooden dock jutting out into the East River.

So you'll chomp on hot, cheesy pizza with tomato sauce squirting between your teeth, and you'll be gazing at the East River and a panoramic view of Manhattan's skyline.

Breathtaking views and breathtaking pizza? Sounds like a spectacular way to spend your Saturday to us.

2. Museum of Sex (233 5th Avenue)

Okay, so drinking might lead to sex. We'll admit that.

But have you ever heard the word "museum" and the word "sex" uttered in the same breath? I mean, maybe someone's said, "We had sex after our museum date," but oil paintings aren't really what gets people hot and heavy.

And the Museum of Sex clearly is.

They have a moon bounce made out of breasts, so, we really don't think we have to do any more convincing on this one.

If you're looking to do something that will make your date want to get it on afterwards, and you don't want to be slurring your words and puking, then going to this museum is the move.

Also, their Hard Core exhibit debuts on June 25th and it's hot, to say the least.

3. Food, lots of it

You'll be saving calories on all the alcohol you won't be drinking, so grubbing hard the weekend you don't go to a bar is justified.

From Gotham West Market to Chelsea Market, we've got some of the best food markets on the planet. Also, if you haven't heard, Anthony Bourdain is set to open a new food market on Pier 57 in 2016, so there's that to keep you going for next year.

If you're more interested in fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables, spend your Saturday perusing one of New York City's outdoor farmers markets.

And if you love strolling through the summertime air while gorging yourself on delicious, flavor infused food, make sure you check out this summer's outdoor food festivals.

Might we recommend Smorgasburg? Might we recommend the scallion pancake and pork wrap at Outer Borough?

Regardless, we know you're used to shoving cold microwaved dinners down your throat while you rush to get to the bar after work on Fridays.

Since you won't be rushing to get to the bar this weekend, try a new restaurant. Go crazy. Eat a lot.

4. Randall's Island

matthillsberg Sunday - A nice (very humid 😅) walk from the UES to Randalls Island never hurt no one. With @rberg912! #latergram #summer #blue #water #ues #randallsisland #eastriver #clouds #ny #nyc #manhattan

Turns out there's a ton to do at this riverside, gorgeous, nature infused park.

If nature's what you're into, take a tour through the Randall's Island Urban Farm. If you love mini golf, and we mean really, really love mini golf, then you need to get to Randall's Island like yesterday.

Randall's Island Mini Golf offers 36 holes of unlimited mini golf (yes, that means you never have to stop until dark when, you know, the park closes) and such natural beauties as a waterfall, a cave, and a stream.

There's also a regular size golf range for those of you who are serious golfers.

You can also take horseback riding lessons at the NYC Riding Academy, watch movies in the park, and attend a multitude of other community events.

It's also a nice place to just spread out a blanket, lay back, and enjoy the sounds of the East River slapping against the shore and the company of your compadre.

5. Waterparks

No, there aren't actually any water parks within the confines NYC.

But we're just a hop, skip, and a jump (err, we mean a ride on the LIRR or New Jersey Transit) away from several water parks on Long Island and New Jersey.

Splish Splash is a Long Island theme park offering 96 acres of pools, slides, and rides for all ages.

[anad]

Love extreme thrills? They have a ride called the "Cliff Diver," which is an extreme body slide that catapults your body eight stories in three seconds. If terror is your thing, the starting ticket price of $41.99 might be worth it for you.

There's also, of course, Jersey's Six Flags Great Adventure, with 11 amazing attractions like high-speed tube slides, the Jurahnimo Falls' 75-foot drop, and the relaxing Blue Lagoon Wave Pool. These tickets start at $34.99.

(Also their neighboring waterpark, Hurricane Harbor, is absolutely worth the day trip out there.)

6. Shakespeare in the Park

jsunrise We are such stuff as dreams are made on; and our little life is rounded with a sleep. #TheTempest #ShakespeareinthePark #NYCsummer @fadibutt and I thank you for the invite and inspiration, @jaredjarednyc & @pocketsizesabs!

Shakespeare in the Park is the perfect way to switch it up this summer.

It brings you culture, the outdoors, and entertainment. It's a remix from the bar on a whole new level.

The Tempest will be staged until July 5th, and Cymbeline will be staged from July 23rd through August 23rd.

7. Beach or pool

Beat the heat in style.

What better way is there to cool off in NYC's sweltering summer than by taking a dip in one of NYC's beaches or pools? Is convincing necessary here?

[anad]

Do you love beautiful views and friends with pals? If you're the type of person who loves to read or listen to music through headphones, you'll probably be grateful for this reprieve from bars.

If you're the type of person who loves loud, blasting music and constant conversation, you can bring the vibe with you to Rockaway Beach or Kosciuszko Pool.
