Well, New Yorkers, Harlem rent is up-- way up since 2002-- meaning they've risen 90%.
According to the Community Service Society, both Harlem and Bed-Stuy's rents have risen astronomically in the past ten years.
With Harlem rents nearly doubling and Bed-Stuy's rents increasing by 63%, New Yorkers' lives have undergone a stressful change.
As in, we've moved from having semi-relaxed rents to very, very unrelaxed rents.
It's just kind of shocking to see these actual numbers... and kind of horrifying that some rents have almost doubled in ten years.
It might make you feel a little bit better to know that the census only focuses on newly-moved tenants, which according to the CSS, "eliminates the tendency of lower rents paid by long-time tenants to smooth out market changes and mask the changes that affect tenants who are looking for a place to live."
So while, yes, there are long-time residents of NYC who aren't paying these horrifying prices, that doesn't really do much to make those of us who moved here recently feel any better.
