Noticed the looming, luxury skyscrapers that have been popping up near Central Park on the West Side? Yeah, so has everyone else.

And everyone who isn't a billionaire are sort of bummed.

Some New Yorkers have moved way past "sort of bummed" and are flat out furious.

Because it used to be that the tallest, most recognizable buildings in New York City were the ones that belonged to the community, like the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building.

These were buildings in which the entire city could take ownership and feel pride.

Soon, when the beginning shot of a movie pans over NYC, it won't be the buildings that belong to everyone that we notice first. It'll be West 57th Street that will be the most prominent buildings poking out against the skyline.

An imagistic projection by New York Yimby illustrates how the midtown horizon will appear in 2018 if developers' plans for sky-scraper apartments are actualized on West 57th Street.

And the sight is alarming at best and depressing at worst. But anger won't keep the buildings from getting built, so we peasants will just have to deal.
