Rain sucks.

It puts a literal damper on outdoor plans, makes your shoes and socks soggy or worse-- it forces you to wear ugly rain boots.

It can drain your energy, frizz your hair, and if you have ever had an injury, you'll definitely feel it on a rainy day.

The rain is an annoying inconvenience no matter where you are, but it's 10 times worse in New York City. And here are 5 reasons why.

1. New Yorkers walk everywhere

Even with public transportation, New Yorkers don't have the luxury of driving to their destination and spending 30 seconds walking from their car to the indoors.

New Yorkers tend to walk at least a few blocks, no matter where we're going, so it's harder to avoid getting wet.

2. The subway

Speaking of transportation, the subway gets wet because New Yorkers are wet. Which makes it extra gross.

You go to take a seat, but your butt gets soggy because someone's umbrella was sitting there right before you.

Also, the floor is slippery, so there's a chance you'll skid across the floor and into someone's soaking raincoat when the subway starts to move.

3. Umbrellas

New York City streets are extra congested on rainy days because so many people are wearing coats and carrying umbrellas.

Standing at all different heights and angles, it's way too easy to get hit in the head or poked in the eye with an umbrella.

4. Puddles

As you're waiting to cross the streets in Manhattan, it's very likely a cab will drive through a puddle that splashes you with dirty rain water.

Yuck.

5. Cabs

If you need or want a cab, you probably can't get one. It is nearly impossible to get a cab in the city when it's raining because everyone else gets one before you.

My third month living in the city, I balanced on my crutches for half an hour in the pouring rain trying to get a taxi. There might have been tears, but they just blended in with the raindrops.
