It’s easy to lose our bearings when we exit the New York City subway, right? We're constantly having to wonder where we’re facing; is that north, south, east, or west?
Ryan Murphy, a student at the Rhode Island School of Design, has taken action to help us New Yorkers out. He’s brilliantly installed a series of semi-permanent signs on staircases coming out of one Upper East Side subway entrance.
He went the simple route: using black-and-white signs so busy New Yorkers wouldn't miss them. The first illegal installation was discovered at the 86th Street/Lexington Avenue subway station.
According to Murphy, they contain "the direction you are facing and what street you would hit if you kept walking straight.”
He also says that he doesn’t see the MTA taking initiative towards helping people navigate the subway in the near future, but hopes that this is something they keep in mind for the future.
So, MTA big-wigs: are you taking some notes on this or what?
