The Good, the Bad and the Fugly of Online Dating in NYC

If you haven’t heard of OkCupid, Tinder, or any of the overpriced online dating services by now, then you’ve been living under a rock.

Finding e-love is the way of the future. Well… now, it seems more like the way of the present. But, many traditional daters aren’t convinced yet.

There are plenty of ups and downs to online dating, and everyone can certainly imagine how awkward it is to have a connection with someone you never met.

To help you out, we’ve compiled the good, the bad and the fugly that comes with your search for true love in NYC. We expect some credit at the wedding.

The good: choices

No one wants to admit it, but almost everyone tries online dating at some point.

All the more to chose from! How could you not? All everyone talks about is swiping left, or crazy messages from creepers, or their weekend coffee date.

The bad: choices

Such a great part of online dating is also a downfall.

There’s SO many freaking people online that it can be tedious to sort through people that are not only attractive, but also seem interesting enough to endure an awkward date. And we haven’t even gotten to dealing with the liars yet.

The good: excuses to “lose” touch

Since talking over the phone seems to be a lost art, most communication happens through text message, and everyone knows those are easy to miss.

Which, in turn, makes it easy to tell someone they “missed their texts,” even though they just want to avoid them altogether.

Ain’t nobody got time for that “I just don’t see this going anywhere” talk!

The fugly: sh*t talking and proximity

On the other hand, word can get around about you being a douche.

Especially since most online dating sites use location as a pretty significant filter. Next thing you know, you’ll be that person who screwed over the cool guy down the block who’s friends with everyone around else in the neighborhood. Not cute.

The good: endless date ideas

It’s New York City, for crying out loud, and you don’t have too much investing in this person you met online.

Go do something unique and fun! It’s not like there’s any shortage of cool things to do these days. Might as well do them with someone who doesn’t know any of your friends.

The fugly: everyone’s too cool to decide

However, no one wants to be the person to make decisions anymore.

It’s all about “whatever you want to do” a.k.a. “I want to seem cool and aloof to make you want me more.”

Spare us the mind games. Do you want a coffee date or a movie date? Just pick.

The good: you’re bound to find someone successful

Like we said, it is New York City after all and it takes a certain amount of stability for someone to have the time and money to date.

Sure, it sounds shallow, but you know you’d be lying if you said you didn’t prefer someone decently well off.

The fugly: success often comes at the price of modesty

-->Yet another unnecessary issue in big cities like this: people who succeed lose all ideas of modesty.

That guy with a startup might just sound confident when you’re chatting over Tinder, but he’ll probably expect you to put out whenever he wants or to be grateful simply for his presence.

The good: plenty of app and websites to join

Again, choices are great! Every unique interest and lifestyle has a website dedicated to finding people with the same traits. On top of that, you can find something for whatever connection you want from friends to hookups and everything in between. With a little patience, you’ll get you want!

The bad: the majority of sites are misused for sex

*sigh* Oh, the hookup culture. You can be a good time, but you’ve really screwed up everyone’s ability to connect.

A quick fling seems to be all anyone wants these days, and that grows old very quickly. Sure, there are millions of people online, but how many truly want something real?

The good: diversity

Everyone from everyone walk of life is ready to meet someone through this ridiculous organism we call the Internet.

If you’re starting to feel bored in a rut with the people around you, it’s very easy to shake things up. Meet didgeridoo player or a polyglot. Go nuts. The Internet is your oyster.

The bad: diversity

As with anything, you’ve got to be careful where you tread. Because all kinds of people are online, you can get mixed up with the wrong person very easily.

This isn’t normally a bigger issue than meeting a creep with too much time on their hands, but you’ve got to protect yourself. Some people might not be able to handle your awesomeness.

The good: no more bars, blind dates, etc.

Being a millennial, you probably don’t meet people in public places very easily and yet, that’s what we feel is the traditional way of finding dates.

Well, save yourself the social anxiety and get working on your profile. By the time you decide to meet up with someone, you should be comfortable enough to shake off the nerves.

The fugly: more chance for disappointment

The higher the high, the harder the fall. It’s very easy to fall for the image we’ve built up of someone who we haven’t met.

Sure, you may get along fabulously with someone over text, but there’s a big chance it won’t translate in person. And it can be a hard pattern to break since that giddy feeling of excitement is very addicting.

The debate never ends over which method of dating works best. Let us know how you feel about your romantic endeavors.

Have you met the love of your life online or do you think it’s just a little too weird? In this city, we could certainly use the advice ourselves.
