9 Bad Habits That Drain Every New Yorker's Wallet on a Monthly Basis

If you didn't get the memo, it’s the 21st century and you probably don’t ever carry cash.

Especially in New York City, you’re probably more dependent on your credit and/or debit card than anywhere else, because cash-only businesses are slowly dying out.

If you’re wondering where your money goes, here are the answers, as these 9 bad habits drain every New Yorker's wallet on a monthly basis:

1. Bar/club tabs

Happy hour was great, but then you stayed out until 1 a.m.. At some point, during all those two-for-one specials, you forgot your credit card was behind the bar.

You then bought the next round for two of your other coworkers, your roommate, and your best friend. Combined with all the other purchased elements from your night-out, your bank account will be in for a big surprise the next morning. YOLO... we guess.

2. The “24-hour deli tab”

This is all too convenient when you get home, especially after a long night.

You’re probably not actually hungry, but right next to “open 24 hours,” that sign might as well say mozzarella sticks, curly fries, cheeseburger, bacon egg and cheese. FML.

3. Pizza

Preferably Artichoke Basile’s, Pugsley’s, or whatever the best and closest pizzeria is in your neighborhood.

This is the only alternative to the 24-hour deli, and you'll probably even spot your roommate while you're there.

4. MetroCards

With those crazy, uneven refill amounts, you find yourself with a $2.45 MetroCard more than you’d like to admit, and those sneaky machines never seem to want your cash. WTF?!

5. Sketchy bodega ATM withdrawals

Sorry, they only accept credit cards if your total is over $10.00!

Every bodega has an ATM that you’re reluctant to use, but weirdly grateful for. Somehow, those miserable surcharges turned your $20.00 withdrawal into $24.50, but hey...

At least you didn't get your card digits stolen off that sketchy-ass machine (well, not yet).

6. Multiple, small drugstore purchases

You thought you were being mindful of your money by only spending $9.00 at Duane Reade, but then you did this three times in one week.

7. Overpriced snacks at Hudson News

These places are so perfectly placed. Whether you’re trying to catch a bus at the Port Authority or you’re waiting for the subway, that 8 ounce bag of pretzel chips is still five bucks.

These charges are notorious for casually sneaking up on your statement, at the most inconvenient of times.

8. Local markets or groceries

We get it. You’re just trying to eat healthier, but you spent $30.00 on quinoa, a tub of cashews, and a sleeve of rice cakes. What goes on?

9. Uber price-surged trips (and those annoying cancellation charges, too)

Sometimes, you don't care about the price surges and other times, you do. But let's be real, it’s a small sacrifice you have to make in order to avoid those ridiculous price surges that you didn’t sign up for.
