Driving in New York City sucks.
Go ahead and tell yourself it’s not while you spend on average three days out of the year in traffic.
But, what if there was a way to get paid to drive? No, we aren’t talking about Uber or the encroaching Lyft. We aren’t even talking about driving at all. More like being a glorified passenger.
Google wants to pay people 20 bucks an hour to sit in their self-driving car and take notes.
Sounds easy, right? Well, you gotta monitor the software and car with the intense focus of a Formula One driver and, sorry speed demons, you have to have a clean driving record.
So, where will you be cruising around?
Hope you like non-bipolar weather because they are doing these tests in Phoenix, Arizona. Yes, you will be in a car for 8 hours a day in Phoenix. Hope the AC works in that self-driving car.
You’ll also be partnered up with someone else, so road trip games, anyone? You better hope that they don’t have a mean right hook when you foolishly decide to play punch buggy and have a good taste in music.

So, is this is the perfect job for a New Yorker?
Well, consider how often you actually look up from your phone when you get into an Uber, taxi or friend of a friend’s car. Or maybe you are the back-seat driver that leans over to hit the horn once the light hits green?
Good luck, Google. You don’t need it but we wish it anyway.
Maybe self-driving cars will make this traffic a bit better? Maybe not. Probably not. It won’t. But, fingers crossed.
