Taste The Flavors of French & West African Fusion at Ponty Bistro in Harlem

Harlem's Ponty Bistro (2375 Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd) has been delighting guests with its seamless fusion of French and West African cuisine since 2014. Spearheaded by Executive Chef Elhadji Cisse, this vibrant eatery offers a menu that embodies the rich culinary traditions of both regions. Chef Elhadji Cisse, originally from Senegal, made his way to the United States in 1995 and joined forces with his cousin, Chef Cheikh, to establish their inaugural restaurant, Ponty Bistro Gramercy, in 2008. Since opening their Harlem location in 2014, it has become a community favorite. On my recent visit, I was eager to immerse myself in this unique gastronomic experience, and Ponty Bistro did not disappoint.

To start, I indulged in the Escargot Snails, a classic French delicacy bathed in herbs, garlic butter, and a touch of cognac. The herbed garlic butter was sizzling over when it arrived. I was intimidated but the flavors were rich and comforting, a true testament to the kitchen's mastery of traditional French techniques. Accompanying this was the Three Cheeses Gougère, a delightful serving of warm, airy cheese puffs that melted in my mouth. Ponty Bistro offers a diverse menu that fuses culinary influences from Africa and France. Their all day menu includes appetizers like Nem (Chicken Spring Rolls), and crispy Tuna with cilantro, picked soy ginger vinaigrette, and wasabi aioli.

However, the standout appetizer for me was the Moules Africana, a dish that beautifully showcased Ponty Bistro's unique fusion of flavors. With a choice of six different sauces, I opted for the African spice sauce, which added a bold, aromatic depth to the tender mussels. I nearly ate the plate all alone and the bread was so soft and delicious (I must return for more.

For the main course, I opted for two standout dishes. The Poisson Yassa, a whole branzino prepared in the traditional Senegalese style, was impeccably cooked—its flaky, flavorful flesh complemented by a subtly tangy onion-based sauce and served alongside white rice. Other hearty entrees include enticing Moroccan Le Poulet Tagine and unique creations like the Ponty Burger made with lamb and a Lobster BLT.

Equally impressive was the Grilled Shrimp Basquaise, where plump, perfectly grilled shrimp were paired with coconut rice, a refreshing julienne salad, and a decadent lemongrass curry coconut sauce. Each bite delivered a beautiful balance of spice, sweetness, and creaminess that made this dish a true highlight of the evening.

No meal is complete without dessert, and I was thrilled to end my culinary journey with the Chocolate Fondant. The rich, molten chocolate center oozed decadence, beautifully contrasted by a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was the perfect way to conclude an extraordinary dining experience.
