Runaway Cow Who Escaped Queens Slaughterhouse Will Not Be Killed!

By now, you've undoubtedly heard about the brave cow who escaped a slaughterhouse in Jamaica Queens. The cow, named Freddie (after Queen legend Freddie Mercury), broke free yesterday afternoon and had a nice little day on the town running through the streets.

Make no misteak about it, the cow was caught and returned to Archer Halal Live Poultry, but there was no news of whether or not he was interrogated (didn't appear to have any information they could further milk from him...).

While many were in utter disbelief over the entire situation, there was one looming question: would Freddie still walk the green mile to greener pastures?

Thanks to the brave actions of Mike Stura of Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in Wantage, New Jersey, Freddie the bravest cow of them all, will live on.

Upon hearing of Freddie's escape, capture, and imminent demise, Stura called up the owners of the slaughterhouse who were unwilling to part with their golden calf. He then drove from New Jersey to Queens to give them an offer they couldn't refuse (read: persuade them, nothing more).

After arriving to the slaughterhouse at 7 p.m., only to find the owners had already left, DNAInfo reports that Stura waited until they returned to work Friday at 7 a.m.

"We just gave it to him,” Tahmena Shafqat, an employee at Archer Halal Live Poultry, said Friday morning. “We didn’t want any money.”

Stura founded Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue about a year ago.

"All of them are saved from the food industry," he said of the 75 sheep, chickens, pigs, turkeys, ducks, and geese he's already rescued.

Of Freddie's future well-being, Stura said, "I’ll give him a home and he’ll live a happy life.” Talk about saved by the cowbell!

With the ending of this story set to be highly agreeable to young Freddie the cow, it's important that we take a moment to reflect on what he gave us yesterday: hilarity, chaos, cops chasing farm animals, animal puns, remembrances of Babe: Pig in the City, and a newfound value of bovine life.

While we're not sure that a life in New Jersey is much better than no life at all, Freddie can live out his life safely knowing he will never find himself on a delicious Lincoln Square Steak menu
